just after some advice on a back-up outboard motor for a seahog shortie 16ft? did have a little seagul but worked out that it never would start once sprayed with water on out bound trip and now the top nut thread has snapped off due to corrosion .
have never needed a back up motor as keep my 2001 40 hp mariner fully serviced ,but one day its going to happen.

what hp / shaft lenght/ best make ? what about these electric motors that are rated in thrust?
i fish southampton water/top of the solent so am never far from the beach but am always battling strong wind/tides

whats the general rule about calling coastgaurd in just a breakdown,is it a big no no or the norm, i`ve also heard of seastart. anygood???

thanks in advance for any info .jamie

Having had the same hull as yours, I'd look for a single cylinder 4hp auxillary outboard. Shaft length depends on how you intend to mount the said motor. If it's on a lift/drop engine bracket the length of the shaft is governed by the height the motor ends up when in the lowered position. Your aim is to get the plate of the motor about 1" to 3 below the line of the hull at the point the engine is mounted, NOT below the keel of the boat like the main propulsive engine. Unless you operate in some particular strong tidal flow the 4hp is an ideal size for your 15' 4" boat.
A good idea is to try and find an auxillary that operates on the same fuel as the main engine, it saves carrying differing fuel mixes when 2 strokes are involved.
I've never used the leccy outboards so can't comment on effectiveness.

Agre with Tomcat on this one.

I have just had a leccy outboard delivered and will be using it for the first time on the 8th.Jan.2010

I will post a report of my findings shortly after that.

I went for the 55lb thrust, which is supposed to be the equivalent of 5hp
