I'll make no bones about the fact that I am more than a little biased towards ABUs, I've used 6500s for over 20 years and never had cause to regret it...and still use my original 1980 model on the beach now. Granted a 6500 would probably not handle rough ground.....a 7000 would however and are still reasonably managable for casting. At one time they used to be as common on our local beaches (East Coast) as the 6500 but they seem to have gone out of fashion these days. They do however have the capability to handle a wider range of fishing situations than the little 6500 which is my favourite. Concrete's comments about ABUs needing more TLC is true but given regular maintenance (15 - 30 minutes after a hard session) they will outlast many other types of reels, millionaires in particular, and very little beats the build quality of a good 6500 or 7000...thats why there's so many old ones still kicking about.
