Hi i am new to boat fishing i have done a bit from the beach where we used breakaway leads. When uptiding is it better to use a breakaway lead or the fixed wire type any tips would be great.

It really depends what you are fishing for. Breakaways are good for most species other than Tope and Ray. Because the technique entails a fair sized bow of line in the tide and relatively fine lines. Setting a hook past the barb in Tope relies on the grip lead driving the hook in past the barb. With most fish, a relatively easier hook hold is ensured due to mainly skin/membrane mouths.
The best and most informative publication on the subject was a book written by charter boat skippers, Bob Cox and John Rawle. Uptide and boat casting was the title I seem to remember. If you can obtain a copy, it covers the technique and subtle differences from species to species.
Breakaways are particularly effective for Cod, the bite usually manifests itself with a heavy pull down of the rod tip followed by a mega slack liner as the breakaway is pulled from the sea bed by the Cod. The angler then winds like a windmill to recover the slack line as the Cod tumbles downtide.
