Hi, My Name is Jay. Im 17 and just wanted to no a few basics about fishing. I Have been fishing a few times along the Portsmouth area e.g. Eastney and Southsea and have hardly caught anything. So i know i am doing something wrong.

Just wondered if any could tell me what is the best tactics to use along any coast e.g. what traces are best? what rigs are best? and what is the best bait to use for particular fish?

Also does anyone know any hotspots along the Portsmouth coast? Also struggling to detect bites ?

Cheers Jay

hiya mate,

i started fishing many years ago but it was a short lived experiance and never taken seriously, this summer just gone i started again and have got right into it and really enjoy it.

best advice that i could give is to just try different tecniques at different locations and also i read sea angler every month for tips. i am already making all my own rigs, nothing special and very basic but we are catching fish regulary, mackerel, dogfish, garfish and pollack of a good size.

watch what other people are doing around you and have a go at making some basic rigs, bait wise we are using mackerel which we caught during the summer, now and then lug or rag and mainly bottom fish in the deeper waters of chesil beach near portland

Cheers. What traces are you making. Could you give me some types of traces to make. If you could that would be excellent.

Cheers Jay
