hi jimbo, i would definetly say that reliability is the thing you should be looking for. if your on a budget i would recomend getting a smaller hp outboard that is newer because it doesnt matter how big the engine is if it doesnt run then it is zero horespower. i personally wouldnt touch an old mecury as there seems to be loads for sale and if they were any good they wouldnt be for sale. mariners are good engines and even the suzukis but that is my opinion
cheers swardy

if your on a tight budget i would say go have a chat with a local outboard dealer most will sell you an engine on pay weekly scheme but they will only release the engine when its fully paid for as for engine quality stay clear of old mercurys and suzukis, i would be looking for an evenrude or yamaha they are very reliable mariner is just a mercury under the hood as they are built by the same factory but are the better end of ther products but this is only my opinion
