well what a day for me!!...

woke to a lovely day in Strood looking forward to heading off to Deal pier for the day!

i got the all set up rod in the water around 09.30., 1st 3 casts all came in with crabs on them grrr...

i met "ducker" and his lady! nice to meet you!

Paul arrived soon after set up and then there were 2..

John arrived that made 3, no fish.. had some lovely sandwiches and yummy bottle of cider courtsey of Paul thank you!
Paul then had a good sized doggy!
still no fish

John had put down his net baited with all sorts and we were getting lots of crabs from there.. and a hermit crab, Paul said thats smoothound material there so John put that on his hook to no avail..
wee while later another hermit but a BIGGER one..
John says Sue thats smoothound stuff get that onyour hook . sigh ok .. lol

10 mins later around 4pm 4 hours after low tide, Pauls says you've got a knock on there Sue.
2 times more.. then nothing i thought i'd lost whatever it had been so carried on with the retrieval..

it was tight and heavy i though i was snagged up..

no it was free.. then oh MY GOD i struggled to haul this in ! i knew it was bigger heavier than my 5.5lb codling from the shore there inNovember so i was smiling! we thought it was a good sized doggy coming in!..

well !!!! :o
there it was !!! a massive! (well to me) starry smoothound!!
Paul gets his net down alas the wind was too much for it so the lads tried tying leads to it.. still to no avail!! my arms were aching like mad this fish looked about a metre long! and felt like a ton to me!! soon we had quite a crowd round!!
3 young lads came rushing over.. we'ew got a better net do you want a try!?

yes please just HELP!!
"JOHN WHAT DO I DO...? PAUL !!! just stay there keep it in the water dont let it get away!!!...
bloody hell i was shaking adrenaline was pumping and my arm was killing me!!
We GOT it in the net and brought it on to the pier!
WHAT A WHOPPER

My 1st smoothound!!

we reckon it was around 10ls.. no one had scales and I/We didnt want to keep him out of the water long..
the lads who brought the net said the biggest one of the month so far for the pier prize was about 11lb so we didnt bother going to get it weighed proberly i was just very very pleased at having caught this monster!

Then after returning him safe and sound to the sea by lowering hin back in the net!

John says... whats todays date Sue..?

Well blow me down its only the kin 1St of July isnt it.. i could've had it up for this months comp!!

anyway such is life you win some you lose some i was just sooooo pleased!!

and that was that NO more fish caught by us 3!! left at 5pmish and dont think any other fish had been caught on the top deck.. we saw some doggies coming in off the bottom though!

well thats my story of my BIG fish!! i
and i'm SURE i'll not hear the end of.. "that was MY bait" !!!! from John aka Crabcatcher who did keep his name well by catching all them crabs in his net!!

hope you've enjoyed the read and pics.. i did and what a great day! i returned home to tell Tom my tale and got told.. " OK mum you can stop BOASTING now"!!! bless him!!

Enjoy

i did!!

Sue

That's a cracking fish Sue - well done hen! big grin

Great report too - Deal's a good place eh? Shame about missing out on the pier's fish of the month comp though - it was £25 three years ago, so dunno what it would be now, but even so, you get a letter from the council and everything! hehe.
