The above link takes you to a report done on behalf of the Scottish Commercial Fisheries Association. It states specifically that global warming has nothing to do with the loss of Cod or Sand-Eels but it is almost certainly over fishing by Commercial Boats.
As a result Scottish Commercials and the WWF are jointly campaigning to the EU to create areas of set aside in the seas around Scotland to allow fish to breed and stocks to recover.
As you may or may not remember, I have an e-petition set up at
http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/Seafishstocks , please visit it if you haven't already, or if you have send it to everyone in your e address books and ask them to sign it. Last count was 885 signatures. We need 100,000.
I am on anglers net having a long argument with a couple commercials who will not read the evidence, and when they do take one tiny paragraph out of context and try and use that to
a: Claim that the new MLS for Bass should be returned to 36cms and
b: Be allowed unlimited Cod and other Benthic Species trawling as there are no shortages.
Many thanks

There are good and bad anglers and there are good and bad commercial fishermen. I know of a bad angler who takes home every single thing he catches. The problem is that a bad angler will kill perhaps a dozen undersized fish about once a week whereas a bad commercial fisherman will kill thousands of creatures at least twice a week. Thus it really is the bad commercial fishermen who need to be strictly controlled otherwise we will lose fisheries for years. E.g. the Grand Banks cod fishery in Canadian waters which has still not re-stocked even though the Canadian government brought in a total ban ten years ago. (I have signed, have you?) |
