Hi bigd, for some time I never used any form of thumb protection myself and on occasion had spool slip and had some nasty burns, after a few times of this happening I tried many idea`s but found the good old cycle inner tubing works the best, basically you just cut a piece of flat tubing about 6 inches long and secure one end with some electrical tape just behind the reel etc and when you go to cast pull tight the other end over your spool secured by your thumb, this really does work very well and even if it does slip at any point which I dont think it would you will not get a burnt thumb
Cheers

nice piccys mrix, i use this method but trap the rubber under the lower coaster, this don't make much difference but means that when released
the rubber tab will flip back out the way.

It also flips back out the way for me as I pull the rubber hard forward etc but I know what you mean and many do put the flap inside the coaster. um just lazy

this method is ok but if you do not want the line getting black then i suggest using a piece of cricket bat handle. you could use whats called a thumby, this is a piece of cycle inner tube which is pulled over the thumb just like a finger stall. dont forget to take it off in between casts otherwise you will suffer with the blue thumb syndrome.
make sure that you keep the leader knot to one side of the spool as you dont want this hitting your thumb without any form of protection as it does have a tend to make your eyes water a little. |

mike,
try cutting your rubber dtrap down a little. it only needs to be about an insh wide. you have got alot of spare rubber there and it could possibly rub on the side of the spool, thus reducing distance and could cause you to crack off. |

Hi Tony, on my last trip the rubber had a nick in it and snapped off, what your seeing in the pic is the but end which was all that was left and had to pull it really hard forward to explain what was ment to happen, the narrow end snapped off, but it was ok just for a quick picy
Cheers
