Fished Hillhead yesterday evening for the 3 hours down to low tide. Got speaking to a bait fisher who told me that a 7lb sea trout had been stranded on the gravel banks earlier and died. The birds had a good go at the poor sod. Just shows what is swimming around!
The water was very murky, not much wave action but the water seems to silt up very easily in this area. I waded out with the falling tide and saw a few fish breaking the surface, which I took to be Mullet, especially as they showed no interest in my DNA Clouser. I decided to change to a Crease Fly, which would create surface disturbance and might be more visible to a passing Bass. As the tide dropped, some large gravel spits became exposed and as I crossed over one spit I found a large area of shallow water alive with school Bass feeding hard on the surface. For the next half hour I enjoyed amazing sport with these game little fish attacking the Crease Fly right on the surface. When a fish showed itself on the surface I cast over it and got an immediate response, sometimes the fish needed 5 attempts at the fly before hooking itself, often coming clean out of the water to stun the fly. Brilliant sport, brilliant fun, just what I needed after a crap day at work. That was the first time I've used the Crease Fly, it won't be the last.
Cheers all.

Crease fly not Grease fly.Its got a small tail tied to hook and then some closed cell foam, shaped and wrapped around the hook. You can stick on some flashy type sticky tape and off you go.
Cheers

Evening Mick. The Crease Fly floats on the surface and if you give it a couple of hard tugs to start off it makes a popping noise and disturbs the water, which will attract any Bass in the vicinity. I guess it imitates a baitfish which is in distress on the surface. The Bass don't mess about when they attack the fly, real top of the water stuff. Should be easy to tie I reckon. Best of luck Mick.
