hi all , had to cut my anchor warp the weekend after nearly sinking the stern and filling the hull with water. (lots of water got wey feet even with false floor)

i`ve got a seahog shortie with bow cleat and stainless pulpit bars and use a lazy line to pull wapr round and tie off at the stern( i know, big no no) and power off using a bouy. works fine on nice day little tide.

got caught out the weekend. big tide sun setting 5-6 wind , cant just power off at angle to warp as pulpit wont take the pressure of warp comming round side of boat running through bow cleat. pull in lazy line boat now side on to wind and tide , almost pulled us both in . got it tied off to stern waves over the back filling boat anchor stuck firm cant break out going down tide we sprang back on rope cant turn boat into flow of tied as it s so strong, cant back up . had a trip wire on anchor but ya need to pull it up tide to break it. now getting very dark bilge pump on over time. buster starting to look a little green .

so we cut it off to fight another day but there must be a safer way in these conditions. i`ve looked at a few web site but no real answers found any help greatly recieved thanks.
p.s fished deep off lee on solent and had lots of dogs , pout and a few smuts and small skate.
sad sad sad sad and prob about £100 loss of gear angry angry

If you're going to be on a bottom that's that rough maybe you should consider a reef anchor. They're made to bend and come out of the rocks and reefs. The coast guard will ticket you if you don't have one off the southeast states. A friend of mine says alot of charters in Alaska use them. We made one for me last week at work. I found enough reenforing bar for five tines and the welder did a fine job of bending them pretty and welded them solid. I was halibut fishing and the current was pulling me at 5mph. Most of the bottom was soft and I sometimes drifted at 1mph or less. If you get stuck it will bend and let you loose. You just bend it back and use it again. It will rust quickly from the salt water so it will stain the deck if you don't put down some protection.

hi harv02redred, what you need to do is trip rig your anchor if you are fishing over rocks or very snaggy ground, to do this all you have to do is run your anchor chain to the end of your anchour then using couple of heavy duty cable ties secure the chain to the bottom of the anchour then run the chain back to the shackle at the top and secure the chain to the shackle with another heavy duty cable tie, this is trip rigging, you will then find that when you want to retreive a jammed anchor the shackle end will brake away thus bringing the anchor to the surface upside down i have yet to have one fail and i rig this way whenever fishing over rocks.
Also you could try putting a a big carabina to a pick up bouy and attach it to you anchor warp then when you power uptide of you anchor the bouy will help to lift the anchor, hope this helps

Forgive me if I am missing something, I am asuming that your anchor was tripped?

In other words the anchor chain fastened to the forward eye, then lead up the anchor and then the chain fastened to the second eye with wire or a cable tie.

If so then why did this second fastening not snap thereby allowing the anchor to be pulled out backwards?

A very puzzled rabbi confused confused confused

hi keith m8, the chain doesnt snap loose as once the achor is set as the chain should be heavier than the anchor so it prevents strain on the anchor a lot of people dont know the correct length of the chain they need to anchor up properly the rule of thumb for small boats is the chain should be at least the lenght of the boat or as i do is to have it one and half times the length of my boat so my boat being 21ft i use a chain of 30ft it may seem a bit over kill but when at anchor i want my boat to stay still, there is no point of having a 15ft boat and having 6ft chain as it wont hold the bottom when you need it most

Point taken and I agree but I cant help wondering if the lad had the chain fastend directly to the top eye of the anchor.

As you rightly point out there is no such thing as overkill when it comes down to safety.

In addition to the anchor trip setting as all ready described in detail. Your problem may be caused by where you are attaching your anchor warp. My friend Crossy has used the lazy line system on his two Seahogs of similar construction to your own. The BIG difference in your system compared to his is WHERE the warp is secured. He always used the winching eye of the boat for the securing point. This prevents any problems with fouling the pulpit. The warp is guided to the side of the boat underway using the lazy line, and passed inside the rear cleat/post NOT secured to it. As the anchor is powered out using the lifting buoy the anchor rope pull is still against the bow eye NOT the stern post. If difficulties are encountered the warp is just lifted back to the outside of the stern post leaving the boat held from the bows again. Pulling the anchor out with the warp secured around the stern post is a no no. I have only seen one small boat sink before my eyes, it was doing exactly what you did. Problem encountered to boat going down was less than 20 seconds!

thanks for advice guys. yes i had a light peice of string as a trip wire on a 5 kilo bruce so the trip would normaly break and the anchor pull out backwards.
trouble i had was once pulled up lazy line to grab main warp to tie off the wind and big tide in same dirrection span us backwards stern on the trouble we then had is we couldnt get any slack to get the nose pointing up tide again.

problem 1 i think is my lazy line to long so spend to long pulling it up to undo knot in main warp and tie it off.

prob 2 think i need some sort of tie off cleat just forward of steering wheel, by cuddy window to tie off at.

and im gonna use winch eye with much shorter lazy line so i can just power off at an angle up tide and let the bouy do all the work and sort the mess when the gear is up and then dont have to worry bout strain on lazy line damging boat.
have also thought bout short slip rope to slide up the lazy linewith the other end inside boat to pull warp into boat once chain up so no need to tie off at rear /side or fish with hook bar .
i`ve fished charters and mates boats for 20 years but when you come to do it ya self and the buck stops with you reality hits home

thanks for any more tips jamie big grin
