When I purchased my last rod I was fortunate enough that I got offered a sellection of up to date rods by Chris Clark. I also had a friend who was a bit of a tackle tart who also had some of the top branded rods on the market at that time.
Having spent a whole morning trying these rods, to my surprise it was the yellow colored Penn PPT Viper I opted for which surprised me to be honest as I had never used a top end Penn beach caster before.
If anyone has the option of trying a few different rods, its definitely the way to go as its really down to personal preference, your overall body build, your strength and just so many different factors really.
So I guess at the end of the day its whats personally best for you.
cheers

I went about it all a about face and purchased a 16ft 8in k2 that I couldn't put into it the power it required and ended up giving it to charity.
We live and hopefully learn.

Hello Dan, I would say that Mrix is spot on when he advises trying different rods, there are so many choices, but also so many casting styles and different builds of people and styles of casting that the wrong rod choice is probaly as common as the right rod choice. Think about the type of rod you want, is it stiff or soft, light or heavy, long or short. Draw up a shortlist and try to test a few but also test one or two others because you might be surprised to find what really suits you.
It will take a little longer before you buy a new rod but you will find the one that suits you faster and it will save you money in the long run.

I recall a few words said by Neil Mackellow (former world champ caster and designer of the Penn Viper) when he visited Hayling a couple of years ago:
1. Too many rods are too stiff for the average angler these days.
2. There is no point in spending a pile of money if you don't have the strength/ability to use the rod concerned to it's full extent. (E.g. what happened to poor old rabbi2.)
Met an 75 year old last night on the beach with a "magnificent 16 ft titanium rod" - he did an overhead thump and cast it about 60 yds - utterly pointless, he would be far better of with a 12 or 13 ft rod at a modest price like yours truly (also a pensioner). |

Absolutely right leadchukka, why on earth some people IMAGINE that a super dooper rod is necessary to catch fish continues to be beyond my understanding. I can cast around 120 yds on a good day if I want with a rod which cost me just £60 but far more importantly, I pretty well know where the fish will be and when in my neck of the woods and what baits they will take. |

hey.
yeah i think this guy really has a point with the rod testing although im not sure that most places will let you take £ 300 worth of rod to the nearest beach a give it everything youve got will they ,,,, as this would probablly solve most of my problems at the moment.
