Hello Tom, if its for spinning, why not have the Abu converted, your local tackle shop should be able to help. And if its for beach fishing try the Okuma magnetix 20. happy
Carl.

Unfortunately the words "What's the best without a level wind" and "It can't be that expensive" don't go together suprise suprise suprise

I suspect that as Bucko says the Okuma is worth looking at for beach fishing, as the braking system is good.

If you are thinking of spinning then how negative is a level wind in reality?
I have a shimano corvulas that I use - it has a level wind - it also has centrifugal brakes and I suspect that the level wind could be removed. I have no intention of so haven't tried.
