Casting with a multiplier for the first time will always be difficult
What reel have you got? some reels cast easier than others.
Some multipliers like the Daiwa 7HT you can cast straight out of the box and others may need a bit of tuning etc. Pendulum casting for a start is very hard and I would not try it until you have learned slightly more basic casts like off the ground casting etc
I personally learnt myself to pendulum cast by reading John Holdens book then to finish off had a casting lesson with tj, www.sea-fishing.orgs casting questions coach guy big grin
Anyway take a look at this site it has a top caster "neil Mackellow" explaining the varius casts and there are some nice movie casting sequences etc

i agree, casting with a multiplier can be hard at first just remember to push your thumb on the spool quite hard at the start of the cast and let go just like you would with a fixed spool, and the main thing is to stop the spool running(spinning) just as the weight hits the water. as you get used to casting it you will feel this through the rod at night. but learn to cast with it during the day(you can see the lead!). i find the daiwa 7ht the best reel as u can cast with it straight out the the box. they are a good starter reel and will help you reach some great distances as ive found! i own 2 of em! as for pendulum dont even try it yet cos you will get birdies, thumb burn, crack offs etc until youve fully mastered the multiplier and basic casts. its all to do with timing and body torque and compressing the blank blah blah blah. look at some web sites i\they will tell you more.
any other help pm me mate or email
regards phil

thanks for all the advice i have just been practicing and did about 20 casts no birds nests the reel i have got is a abu 7000 and a daiwa sand storm rod i moved the reel further down the rod that helped and i kept the brakes on full and i was ok but when i loosened them up i kept getting small tangles so i guess i need more practice

personally unless your fishing over rocks and alike the abu 7000 is a bit big, stick to a standard beach caster multiplier ie daiwa 7ht or abu 6500 mag elite or penn 525 mag which is good for heavy ground as well as clean.

it's all down to reel tuning by the sounds of it. i personally get the reel running fast enough so that it just starts to fluff, but doesn't birds nest. then give it a tiny tweak to tighten the spool (only about 1/4 of a turn).

happy casting

the 7000 is to big for beach casting you need something smaller like the abu 6500 or penn 525 super mag.The pendulum cast should wait until yuo are very proficient with the off the ground cast as that is the basis for a pendulum cast, and it aint about power in the cast, the pendulum is a slow cast,co-ordinating timing and body rotation, until the power stroke comes into it at the end.If you aint casting properly OTG stay away from pendulum mate, not only could you hurt yourself you could also hurt or possibly kill someone

when tuning a multiplier that flufs up during a cast, itmay be that you are snatching at the sinker instead of delivering it smoothly.
if this is nt the case, and your magnets or break blocks cant calm your reel down, the answer is thicker oil.
i would rather use british rail axle grease in my bearings than tighten up the end cap, if this is overdone it can cause the spool spindle to distort

Depending where you live - I would find my local casting club & have a few sessions with them - I started in March this year fixed spool overhead thump & 110 meters - now casting multiplier down the butt 170m

Looks like i have the same problem.

Using a Ron Thompson Mission Multi which i just keep nesting, very frustrating when your used to a fixed that very rarely ever does it.

Thumb burn!!! that really bl***y hurts!!!

So the main advice would be to tighten the brakes up abit, i'll try it, if still no joy im getting rd and getting a fixed.

Brother has just got multipliers, fine casting and no aparant nests. Has found that when lead in flight snaps up, could this be the line laying thing ( not into multipliers but the bit that moves from left to right on a screw and lays line on spool). If this is likley to be the problem what can be done. If not would thicker grease be a pos answer in the spool, as may be a slight over run.

Any surgestions.

Yeah that is the level wind mechanism. Used to be the first thing people did ( that wanted to power cast like the pendulum ) had the reel converted so that the levelwind is removed and a new stainless bar put onto the reel. It is extremely difficult to pendulum cast with a level wind on. I have done it but the risks are high. I would never use a reel with one on. Ok for casting overhead etc but if you want to progress to another more powerful style then the reels would need altering.

Sorry mate but i cannot agree there,i have seen and known Peter Thain to pendulum with a level wind on a few times, although peter does most of his tournament casting without level winds on,i know a few guys from here northumberland way,who use reels like the abu sports mag and pendulum to huge distances. My personal favourite reels are mag elite, super mag and slo30sh (non level winds,to anyone reading this who does not know)
