Just got out the kit and found that the best reel is a Daiwa 4000C fixed spool. It says it has loaded drag coil spring (what does that mean?) It turns smoothly and has no visible problems. Obviously it's quite old, but it doesn't look too bad. It has 2 ball bearings and will take 200yds of 20lb line. What do you think guys? Is is worth putting new line on it? Should I take it apart to add oil/grease to working parts?

What sort of rod would work with this kind of reel?

Of the rods, the only one with no rust or verdigris is small (possibly 7 foot) with a cork handle. No manufacturer's marks left on it. There are 5 rings, starting approx 1" dia, going down to just over 1/4 inch. It isn't very thick - circumference near handle of less than 2 inches, going very thin at the top - quite bendy, whippy. so what is it? Could it be for spinning, or is it not a sea rod at all? I presume the Daiwa reel is too big for it!

Just had a look on mikesreelrepair.com and the reel seems to be a medium surf caster so would suit a 10-12ft bass or beach rod.Check the bail arm roller revolves easily so it doesn`t chew up the new line. Undo the front drag a bit and pull some line off to see if the clutch is smooth ,if not strip and clean it a light spray of wd 40 and re-assemble. Bail arm trip will need a squirt of oil and if u take the side plate off you can move the old grease about and give it a light spray of wd if it looks dry,not too much or it will run out when in use. Exploded view on site mentioned if it falls apart on you. good luck...sniggle
