| A few were caught from Samphire Hoe yesterday. But considering there were at least 50 anglers feathering I only saw about 10 fish. |

|
|
Thursday 8th May....there was a massive shoal of good sized mackrell about 500 metre directly off Shoreham Arm (obviously I was in a boat!) As soon as dropped feathers over had full house - about 30 mins. before high tide (1.30pm - 2.00). There was a 'commercial' trawler circling with 200m - 300m of the harbour entrance - presumably netting.
Saturday 11th - a bit harder to find but hit a small shoal again about 600m off arm just after ht. |

Yes that trawler's been around for several days doing the same. Fished right across the harbour, but gets away with it.
What with that and the dredging for aggregate catches on the East Arm have been really poor.
Would never surprise me though to see some new species being caught, or old species that haven't been seen for a while.
Caught mackerel until end November and started late March, so something is changing.
Wouldn't mind if we get red bream back, or even dentex, but suspect we will start catching mediterranean species. |

Hi, I am new to the forum and decided to try mackrele fishing for the first time. I went down to Brighton Marina on Sunday 11/05/08 between 1.30 to 5.10 pm, all the way from Bedford, but had no fish at all. There was a lot of people but no one had any. Also no other fish as well, except 1-2 people catching 3-4 garfish, thats it.
I would love to fish for mackrele, just one day, when its peak. As I have heard you could get 4-5 in one go, which would be a great experience. Any tips and advice when this will be possible for even a novice like me would be much appreciated. |

If you purchase a mackrel trace the I would suggest that you remove the 2nd and 4th hooks as you can get into a terrible tangle if you have a full trace on also keep the trace moving at various speeds on retrival, dont use grip weights. Hope this helps. Oh use 3 to 5oz weights. keith
By the way a warm welcome to the forum mate, you'll soon settle in, there a good bunch on here. |

I use a bass bandit at the end of my mackerel feathers instead of a weight. Where there's mackerel there's likely to be predators.
Trouble is you need to be alert. Last year at Hayling I was pulling in mackies 3 at a time with the drag tightened down and there was a bang that nearly pulled the rod out of my hands. Unfortunately they tend to make the main body of feathers from fairly lightweight line and it snapped. So if you're going to try for bass at the same time use a baitrunner and be ready to flick the switch pronto - or I suppose you could make your own feathers using leader. |
