Was fishing at Charmouth on Saturday evening. Busy getting the usual bites of nothing when a rod went right over, the mackerel fillet had been decimated.
Time to try the whole mackerel, lob it out, a few minutes later rod goes right over. Reel in the remains of the mackerel. The same thing happened a few times.
Mighty annoyed as i reckon i may have had my first bass but they won't eat the hooks (can't say i blame them, nasty sharp things).
SO, what am i doing wrong? I have been using a pennel with 2/0 & 3/0 hooks. One hook goes through the head, the other by the tail. I have had problems getting the hooks sticking out so how do i do that? Anyone got any pictures of a correctly hooked mackerel? |

Hi Me42
For a start up your hook size to either 4/0 or 5/0 |

| Sounds like cuttlefish were having a go at your bait. |

Your rigs fine, as mentioned already you may want to increase hook size, depending on the size bait you're using. You're almost certain to not pull in any monsters fishing Charmouth, however the Bass are present.
Bass like to run, sometimes they will attack from the side and then come back and run with the bait so you need to adjust your drag accordingly.
Let the fish tire and then beach that bad boy. |

Thanks, new rigs with bigger hooks planned then.
Would a cuttlefish eat half a mackerel? Can they be hooked? |
