I regularly fish from the shore around Luz, Lagos and the southern bit of the west coast (above Sagres). Will be there next week drowning worms.
If you need any info I'll try to help.
I've been out on a game fishing trip once out of Lagos and caught a small blue shark of about 12 lbs (there's a picture on this site somewhere). The boat was Pescamar and the skipper Jacko was a good guy - very helpful.

Hi Limpetboy
Not sure about buying a licence at the post office (correio). BBM may be more up to date than I but a year ago you could only buy them from the Marine Office in Olhao or through ATM machines if you have a portuguese debit card. Try the correio but be prepared for a wait.
Can't tell you about fishing in Alvor but Lagos is about 15/20 mins drive west. The town is divided by an estuary - the main town to the west and a railway station, marina, big beach (Meia Praia) and a fishing port to the east. Follow signs towards the station (estacio - not estadio, thats the football stadium), go straight past and follow the road to the fishing port. There you'll find a row of warehouses/restaurants. Some of the warehouses sell bait - live crabs and rag (coreanos - small like maddies and sold in boxes). There's also a good tackle shop there.
2 minutes walk takes you to the rock promontory guarding the harbour entrance - mullet and black bream.
Better still is just west of Luz (10 mins further drive) where there are loads of rocks. Float fish using a bubble float or a handmade weighted cork float available from the tackle shop (this is what the locals use) - rag is best on small hooks. Garfish, bream, mullet and occasional bass.
Further west there is an outcrop next to Ingrina beach which is productive but don't fish Sagres. The locals fish from rock ledges and 3 get killed a year.
If you seriously want a day out the west coast is best, but an hours drive for you. Try the two beaches near Vila do Bispo, further north at Carrapeteria and further north again on the 2 beaches near Vale de Telha - I fish the northerly one. More productive but the fish are still generally small although more plentiful. These are sandy beaches with a few rocks - fish near the rocks.
No rockling!
Lure fishing is for the winter - stick to rag, mackerel, squid or peelers.
Good luck and have a good holiday - I'm there next week if anyone wants company. |

hi all !!
right firstly you CANNOT buy a license at the post office the onl;y place you can buy one is at the banks ATM, alas.. you must have a portuguese card! soooooooo what we did was.. go into the tackle shop near Albufeira RIGHT off the roundabout with the watches on it first LEFT and its in a parade of shops on the RIGHT! bought our bait n bits n bobs and asked him to come to the bank across the road with me n my passport and he did it for us costs 3euros you need your PASSPORT, and you have to choose walking ie off the beach boat or summit else lol and thats that the license runs for 1 month.. BUT..
if you choose to go out on a boat trip you have to buy license again from them for BOAT fishing again 3 euros!
we went out on
www.cruzeiros-da-oura.com
for 3 hours reef fishing 9 of us on board.. caught only around 10 fish in total not great i caught a bream alas Tom caught nuffin and got very very sea sick poor thing.. swells were upto 10 feet !! i jest not! lovely sunny afternoon but damned cols 6 miles out!
went fishing near near the fort out at Cape st vincent had a wander around there then back to the roundabout hang a right n go to the right at next roundabout to a lovely lovely beach that we go to every year cant remember its name but gorgeous has a wee diner and a loo!! fished there nuffin blaaaaah saw a fantastic thing tho.. a rainbow around the sun! wicked i'l try to post the pic!
anyway thats that fun had by both of us anyway! rainy a few days warm n sunny the rest!
