Fished the beach just to the east of the Sea Life Centre today between 18:15 and 21:00.

I made the elementary mistake of forgetting tides are in GMT not BST so arrived an hour earlier than I intended confused

Not that it really mattered as I got bites more or less straight away happy I ended up catching three very small bass using crab on a size 2 limerick.

It was worth going though as towards the end I was dropping the leads just past the 'green hats' (I would have been happy with just before equally but casting short isn't easy ha ha). At that position I was getting bites (that I couldn't hit) virtually as the rod dropped in the rest - not bad for what was more or less high water slack I reckon.

In any case, I've a few crabs left and intend to use them tomorrow evening when it's dark, probably just as the ebb proper starts or maybe a bit earlier if I'm impatient in the last 1 1/2 of the flood.

Bigger baits and bigger hooks tomorrow I reckon.

I'm quite surprised I didn't blank today what with it being bright with the wind in the East. If I do go tomorrow I'll report in good or bad.

My surname is indeed Watts (first name John) - perhaps we're distant relations somehow (although I can't think of any relatives called Steve so it'd be pretty distant lol)

I am a bit more hopeful for tomorrow. It's always ten times better down there when it's dark and I'll be fishing bigger hooks and bigger baits now I know they're there and where they're hanging out (or were today anyway).

Today was a kind of recce - now I know there are fish about I don't mind waiting about for a better one but I hate sitting about watching a still rod tip when I can't be sure I'm not wasting my time.

I had a couple of sizeable ones towards the end of last year's season (only started again in September after a few years off) so I know I can get a meal down there - I don't suppose I'll ever catch a biggun down there but if it don't fit under the grill it's not much use to me happy
