|
|
Hi all,
have bought some varivas shockrig that was recommended on here - is there a set formula for how long the leader should be ?
Also got some Gemini Genie riglinks, have checked that they fit ok thru rings.
Plan is to join leader to mainline with Allbright Knot, and join leader to riglink with a Trilene knot. Can assemble this in the house, then should be able to quickly and easily swap over rigs on the beach.
hope you seasoned sea-anglers can confirm that is a decent plan ? :-)

| savo with respect to the leader strength i was informed 10lb for every oz of lead then add on a extra 10lb for security, Im sure someone will shoot me down with this comment but thats what ive been told. With the length i agree with duncbooth on that |

| The only point I would make is that sometime folk tend to forget the terminal tackle and if it's under the shockleader strength then this is where the snap off would take place. It pays to make your own and then you know the breaking strain of the terminal tackle so to avoid any mishaps. |

I agree with rabbi, I use 80lb leader and rig body, as i very rarely cast any heavier than 6oz, and it gives me a bit of security with knot strength and for crimps holding the snood in place on my rigs.
I was always told that crimps weaken the line a little, and a knot never has the same strength as the line it is tied from.
I may be wrong, but I have never had a snap off other than the day i forgot to click my reel out of gear, Full blown power cast, and snapped an 80lb leader and twisted the cage of my abu 6500 out of shape. Luckily the lead went seawards, but the reel bit the dust!! |

| As is well known on this forum, I do not always use shockleader. If I am just doing 40 - 60 yd lobs with a 3 or 4 oz sinker, I find that a decent 20 lb BS line is adequate. On the other had if I am chucking a 5 oz sinker out for distance using my usual modified OTG powercast then both the rig body and SL have to be 60 lb to avoid crack offs. |

| Well you are right MM but there are still an awful lot of folk out there who don't know about this stuff (I see them on our local beaches from time to time) plus a constant stream of newbies who want to learn. |
