Now my quick hello's out the way, time for my first informative post.
After a drive to West Bay, found only a hard wind followed by showers, we drove across the border to Seaton in Devon.
We reached Seaton around 16:30 (high tide was around midnight). The sun was out and the wind was hardly noticeable. We headed to the harbour for a spot of mullet fishing.
The harbour was alive with them, however with every effort using bread on both a float and bottom proved they had no interest.
Spinning a rag on a bar spoon may give better results tonight!
After a couple hours with the Mullet we headed to the seafront for a spot of spinning, and within minutes all 3 of us were in with our first shore caught Mackerel of the year.
The setup I use for Mackerel I beleive is a total killer, never seems to fail.
A little later I pulled in a good size Herring which will be on a plate sometime this eveining.
From 8pm it seemed all too easy to catch young Pollack, and within 20 minutes one of us had already caught 10.
Tactics and setups changed, we were watching a Bass chasing my spinner into the shore. This happened 3 times and one of the other guys decided to go for a spinner also.
This lead to the two of us chasing 3 Bass along the shoreline.
Still no Bass caught, I'm amazed at the fishing we had last night and at such low water. Keep in mind we left the beach around 21:30, a few hours before high tide.
Seaton was fishing great last year, and judging by reports this year already, it seams a good venue once again! |

well done browner - sounds like you had a superb evenings fishing!
You will have to tell us what your fail safe mackerel method is now...
Were you using toby like spinners?
Cheers |

Hi Jerry, cheers.
As with all my fishing finds, except good Bass marks, I tend to pass the info on.
My "fail safe" or just lucky method for Mackerel is simply in the feathers.
I tend to go for the blue feathers on a smaller size hook. Usually cut a couple of hooks off too. The smaller hooks tend to pass the clumps of weed unlike the larger hooks found on Hockeyes that are generally used for Mackerel fishing.
I find with these blue feathers, that although they have a smaller hook they are still able to catch, Garfish, Mackerel, Herring, Pollack and Bass, maybe others too.
Obviously you can get many different coloured feathers with different sized hooks. It's all down to trial and error for me really.
I can generally outfish people fishing either side of me (Mackerel anyway), and keep in mind that I cut at least 2 hooks off the ready made rig.
The spinner at the end is also down to personal choice. I use anything from a Dexter Wedge to a bar spinner.
Early last night the Mackerel were on the bottom, so I used a 40g Dexter and then later went onto using a bar spinner that looks like a small eel chasing the feathers. |

Just got in from another session at Seaton.
Thought I would test my already proven theory again.
Me, the missus and 2 others on the beach. I'm between them fishing with Hockeyes, the other 3 are fishing with the blue feathers. We fished for about 3 hours with me only catching 4 Mackerel on the Hockeyes.
The missus outfished me with 11 Mackerel, the other 2 had enough Mackerel between them to feed us and supply bait for a vast amount of trips. They also had 8 Pollack and 1 Herring.
So once again Blue Feathers are proven!
I enjoy fishing whether I catch or not, so I'm always doing these various tests to see what products are really proven to be best.
Obviously different marks may require different tackle. |

Nice one Browner
I will have to test your theory to see if it works for me. |

Hi browner
Thanks very much for the detailed advice - am on the lookout for blue feathers now. Nice to see someone who is prepared to pass good info on - not enough of it goes on in most fishing - think thats why we come on here really.
Hope you have a good season - roll on summer!
Cheers mate |
