| I've fished a couple of small matches what have been local to me, and found most of the local match anglers using peeler crab and white ragworms for bait going after flatties. Don't know the species of fish you get down south though. I would say rag worms would be a good bet at most places around the UK. |

like bigbassman said find out about the rules , when i had comps and its 3 hooks i tend to have 1 rods with just macky big bait big fish , dont always work that way lol and the other rag and squid, making cocktails with the bait can tempt most fish but gl anyway |

Hi Sue , i would go for a 3 hook flapper with size 2 hooks ,preferably kamasan B940's as they are a very strong hook and if a bass comes along it will cope with it . Bait wise i would stick to lug/rag cocktails even better if you can get harbour rag ( maddies ) and as Stuart says make up identical rigs to double pat coz sometimes flatties take the bait down and it takes time to un-hook them so you need a bait back out as soon as possible .Apart from that have a good day , speak to the other anglers coz the majority will help and i hope you raise plenty of dollar for the boys school .
P.S. If your not familliar with double patting all it means is while one bait is out bait up another rig ready to go out as soon as you bring the other one in . Just un clip the retrieved rig put on the baited rig and cast out and sort out the rig ( and fish) you just brought in while the rod is still ot there fishing . |

the good match guys win by fishing every minute of a match.... thinking, weighing up conditions, changing tactics and watching the rod tip for every little indication..... and using their experience.
Change /replace bait often, not every half hour.... and leave the wandering around chatting until after the match ! |

if it helps fish 2 rods and have your other rigs baited up ready to swap them over as this save time during the hours you have , on the comp i tend to leave the bait out for roughly 10-15min with the odd turn of the spool and tend to have spare reels incase of a birdy, if its a place i have never fished i do look around me a bit to see if the other are casting long or shorter and like shaddock said stay focus on your rods as it does happen where the other person with take a wander to see if others have caught and they misses a big bite or maybe a chance of losing they rod and reel , and dont let any one reel your rods in for you as if its spotted some anglers can get funny and tell the stewarts in charge its against the rules gl anyway |
