Hi everyone, i'm after some tips on catching fish during times of rough seas, i went fishing off my local pier the other day during a 29mph wind and only had one bite in 3 hrs.

I'm normally a summer fisherman, but i got so annoyd at waiting to go fishing that i thought sod it, and came up against this problem.

Any and all tips or advice wil be gratefully appreciated, Thanx.

All I can sugest is to use the heaviest weight possible coupled with Braid line to minimise tide drag this also puts us in direct contact with the fish. I suspect that you were mising bites due to the fact that your rod tip would be doing a war dance due to the heavey weather. Braid would minimise this and if you haven't used it before the use it on a fixed spool. Hope this helps.

IMO fishing is meant to be enjoyable so agree with bassman. Having tried some rough sea fishing in the past and just loads of weed and problems with the sinker staying put, I just don't bother anymore unless I can find a spot where it's sheltered.

Years ago we looked forward to heavey weather, This is the time that fish go on the feed with all the seabed being churned up. Iv'e seen and caught some of my best fish at times like these. Don't let these fair weather fishermen put you off, LOL. I was even fishing on the jetty at Blackpool when the jetty collapsed, (not recommended)

Hi BooBoo83, nothing wrong with fishing in rough weather. I was fishing Chesil in force 9 winds back in summer 2007 and was catching! Tips: Fish off the beach not on a pier, you will be lower to the ground so can combat the wind better. Use a beach shelter to keep you and you kit warm and dry. Set your tripod low down and have your rods facing in the direction the wind is blowing, this helps minimise movement.other than that all you can do is lob out a 7 or 8oz fixed wire lead and hop it holds bottom.

thats one of the problems in south wales our beaches are not like chesil and cannot use the bivvies due to the fact that we got the highest rise and fall tides in the world some of oue beaches from bottom to top tide you can walk back about 1/2 mile sometimes further
