tips for catching flaties

anyone got anything they use special for bait for these?
favourite time of tide to fish?
what types of rigs?
beads or no beads?
long or short distance when it comes to casting?

3 hook flapper with small hooks (size 2 or 4) and use smelly old lug baits. Make sure you keep the hooks on the bottom by letting the line out so its slack(ish).

When I first started sea fishing I used to get flatties using the old Avis booms, again with coloured beads on the hooklengths baited with Lugworm or Harbour rag. I dont know if the beads really serve any purpose, as I have also had the same results without them.

I dont use booms anymore from the shore, so now when I'm flatty bashing I use either a 2 or 3 hook flapper, or a wishbone rig.

Hook sizes I use are 2 or 1 or 1/0 (Just incase anything bigger picks the bait up).

As you mayhave gathered most rigs you can buy of the shelf, but that is not to say that you can't copy andorve them. For instance I myself use a two up and one down for general fishing, but I design them so that the hook length can be unclipped from the swivle on the main line, thus making it easier for the tackle to be put away in plastic bags ready for the next trip without fear of tangles. When I say twoo up and one down I' fering to one hook below the weight and two above. If you want to increase you casting distance go for one up and one down. For the bottom hook use a lenght of about 8inches with about 4 or 5 beads trapped two inches away from the hook. Experiment with hook size and find out what suits you and your location, as a starting point try size 1 for the bottom hook and size 1/0 for the hooks above the weight. Hope this helps. Keith in blackburn. Oh by the way any locals fishing Blue bridge a Fleetwood this Sat Call over and have a chat I'll be there trying my luck.
