I never use a finger guard, I purchased a clip that I whiped to the butt of my rod and traps your line until you release your finger during the cast. Don't ask me what its called but It only cost a couple of quid and I have had it for about 6years now. Someone will no doubt give me the name for it.

Totally agree about the Penn Surfmaster eggbeaters. They put little brushes either side of the spool to prevent the line slipping behind it but it doesn't work. I use a Shimano Aero most of the time now and don't have the problem.

Re finger guards I've found them too cumbersome. Buy a roll of surgical tape at Boots and wrap a few turns around you finger.

or tape a piece of pipe to the underside of the rod where the spool is so that there is lesst travel between the line (held by your finger) and the rod itself.

i use a shimano airlex 8000 (i think its 8000) and its really good in my opinion, holds alot of line, easy to cast, great rate or retrieve, and its a large spool so good distances can be achieved big grin also my fishing buddy uses a penn surfmaster, which is just as good but maybe a bit more expensive

i use a grauvell zeus and its miles ahead on any reel i have used before such as the bioaster or aerlex models from shimano. I know use it more than my multipliers so trouble free fishing every trip. it puts me out there everytime. I have it paired up with a grauvell rc beach 13ft.
I love it as a simply lob can put me in the fish.

never fish without a finger guard now as it can hurt like a bitch if cut by line like everyone learnt the hard way crying
