There are usually fish to be caught from this beach.... but most people cast as far as they can to where the fish are not..... casting over where the fish are in the process. It is a beach where 40' is often enough. There is a reef which runs out from under the Grand, suss the position of this and you will get wrasse.... a 30lb+ conger was dragged out of there recently in a shore match.
There are nets in the bay, one of the guys is a good source of info as to what fish are in the bay, and what they are eating. I know he returns any fish that he has not got a market for ( such as big rays). I could be that someone put some pots by the rough ground ( this beach is the only place other than Deal Pier where I have caught lobsters by rod and line. )
Many matches all around the coast are fished where little is caught.... but then a lot of matches are fished by 'strangers' to the area.
I have put a lot of time and effort into making an blog as a source of information.... unfortunately I don't have the time to respond to every request for info, a bit of time with google or a forum search facility would get info on most marks.

I also fished the match and was pegged immediately below "the grand". Two others and I in the same groyne fished varying distances between a short lob into the surf and 120yds. We had previous knowledge of the reef which I concentrated on (I know this - I lost approx 10 hooklengths !).

Whilst I was disappointed we did not catch more, it was a match, and we all had an equal (and very low) chance of catching and the prizes all went to the captor of the large wrasse which was well deserved.

As for the gill nets, if they were put there delierately as they knew a match was going to be fished, then I would be upset, but otherwise, I don't normally fish matches so have the freedom to change venue if I suspected netting.

By the way, we did charter a boat from Poole the day before, and although we caught fish, they were very thin on the ground so I suspected the beach would be hard going.
