Do you really need such a heavy weight? If you're concerned about it not holding at the bottom then it would probably be better to get a break-away. (In my opinion!) |

if you really have to you should use an 80lb shockleader withit.
See the article "Leader Line - Is it really necessary" at the top of the East Coast Forum for more info. |

I regularly use 7oz weights when casting unclipped rigs long distances as it slows the cast down and doesn't blow your baits to pieces. It's also good in a strong headwind, because the heavy weight punches through the wind nicely.
I don't know if the question was asked in a way whether it's ok to cast 8ozs on 15lb line or just to use an 8oz weight with 15lb line. Provided a decent leader is used then it will be fine.
As far as casting 8ozs, you won't be able to hit the cast anywhere near as hard as with the lighter weights, because of the extra weight working against you. |

Last year my mate took to casting a 1/2 ton ball with a 50 ft crane. as reported previously. Manage to chuck it about 1/2 mile but spooked all the fish for miles around and destroyed 3 beach huts so he has had to give it up. |

Did he use a "crane" swivel at the top of his rig |

If your gonna use a 8oz lead, i'd defintely use a 80LB shock leader for casting out. As for 15 lb main line that would be fine as long as you use a shock leader that is sutable for casting such a heavy lead. |

15 lb line with an 8oz weight ?
First thing I would advise is check the area where you are casting from.
A break off as you cast could be very costly. you will definitely need third party insurance.
A lighter breakaway lead would be more advisable |

There is absolutely no problem with casting 8oz leads on a 15lb line as long as you have 80lb shockleader. In fact at some venues (such as Orford) it is the norm.
There is more risk using lighter leads with no shockleader. |

I agree I did try to edit my last to add -"-Still use a Shockleader" but for some reason it would not allow |

To need 8oz the tide must be racing - either change to a gripper like breakaway - or rather pack up - i would suggest the tide is far to strong.
Here at the BC when the tide ebbs it can race away. I have tried upto 7oz with not a hope of holding.
cheers
