hey all,

im brand new to wales currently living in newport and im very keen on getting into the sport of sea fishing. ive just gone and got a rod, a reel, lines, hooks etc.. but havnt been out yet. incase there are any people reading and wouldnt mind showing and 19 y o novice the basics and tips regarding cod fishing. have been carp fishing in belgium for the last 5 years but when it comes to the sea things are quite clearly different.

in other words any tips on here are much apriciated or somebody who could show me the way actually on the shore would be fantastic.

thanks in advance,

There are 2 pieces of advice i would give anyone fishing the bristol channel.

1) The tide is lighting. Do not bother on big high tides as when it starts to back off the bottom can become imposible to hold. I fished battery point at portishead at the weekend and the tide was around 12.6. It was fine fishing it up and at high water things are quite still. But like a radio switching on the second the tide turns it is pack up and go home because i have tried 9oz and still cannot remotely hold bottom.

I have not fished the wales side of the channel but do some ground work first. Visit your chosen areas at low water and high water to get a feel for the area. I find the tide difference at low and high can be quite intimadating, particulalry combined with it's speed - always air on the side of caution especially if going alone.

2) Make your bait big and fresh. The water is sooooo dark the fish feed by smell as they cannot possibly see anything. I have learned every 20 mins or so to reel in and apply fresh bait. I mean squid is so cheap it.

cheers

lee
