Catching mackerel is a very easy job to do. It’s just the case of light rod, light reel and a nice shinny spinner and finding a pier with room to get on. It’s possibly a time when you will see the pier at it’s fullest so get down and secure you spot for the coming in high tide. It’s just the case of casting out and reeling it in at a nice steady speed. It’s easy to tell if you are reeling in at the right speed just by looking at the spinner if it’s rising to the top of the water then obviously you bring it in to fast if you are dropping it to low then reel in quicker and don’t touch the bottom that’s just asking for trouble. The right depth can change all the time so it’s just the case of changing speeds to find out what depth is working for that day.
That’s pretty much it about catching them the only other thing you need is a nice day in the mackerel season which usually runs from June to September depending on how good the summer has been.
