Just started practicing casting tonight and found line bird nesting an awful lot. Running a fixed spool reel with 15lb line and a 50lb shock leader, how can i combat this? I have no chance of catching fish but could captian the IOM knot unravelling B team in the Commonwealth games!!! |

with a fixed spool, it can be because there is too much line on the spool and it "loops" when it comes off during the cast. Also when there is not enough weight on the end of the line - this happens aswell when using light lures when spinning.
Fill the spool to about 3mm below the lip of the spool and make sure you have a decent lead on the end - making sure the rod can handle it OK.
You may also want to check nothing is fouling the rings and the leader knot is not too big and hitting the ring tip.
I think that covers everything
Good luck. |

Unlikely to be any of the previous answers.........as you would have worked that out for yourself. Could be a number of problems.
First a question.....does it seem to tangle itself when when you cast out?
If it does its most like to be line twist which can be caused by a number of faults....
a) You have crap line which was supplied with problems - normally comes with cheapo brands and involves the way the line is spooled at the factory.
b) you've laid your line on wrong i.e. by letting it spill off the storage spool as you load it onto your reel - this will always cause line twist and uneven tension on the spool. Get someone to put a pencil through the centre of the storage spool so it can be "unwound" as you load it onto the reel.
c) Less unlikely.....your terminal gear is spinning as you reel in (a real problem if you use lures) or you continue attempting to reel in when the slipping clutch is operating, either against a fish or a snag - this will kill your line!
d) The line roller on the bail arm is seized......this puts a lot of stress on your line, induces line twist and stretch and will cause heat build-up. It also loads the line on your reel with uneven pressure which may cause a spring effect when casting, throwing multiple loops of line off the spool at the same time. You might also find that the line cuts a groove in your line roller!
e) Using too stiff a brand of line (or too heavy test). Again, this can cause a spring effect when casting.
f) Line too old - eventually no matter how carefull you are the line will need replacing the same as it does on a multiplier.
Nearly forgot.......it could be to do with the reels line laying capabilities....it could be burying the line into itself as it reels on.....to check simply clip the bale arm over and pull some off by hand carefully.....if it catches every now and then, that might be your problem. |

it may also be to do with how you are standing.
additionaly, if you stand on a ley line whilst casting, this can also add to the problem. It is a well documented fact that the swirling effect of the line coming off can summon up Pagan demi gods that can cause all manner of problems to your casting.
So, if you hear a lot of noise behind you that sounds like "woooo woooo" just take a couple of steps to the left (or right) and you should be Ok. |
