Ive just treated myself to a ABU 6500C3 CT MAG ELITE Beachcaster reel (the Green one not the brand new model) and now I have to fill it with line

I havent fished with a multiplier before but am told that this is easy as they get providing I dont go to mad to start with

Anyway the question .... Line

1) Braid or Nylon

2) What weight should I go for when used in conjunction with a 12/13' beachcaster ..... 15-17lbs be enough?

3) Any tricks to loading the line in the absence of a level wind?

Also if given the choice of a semi decent rod to go with it to say £60 what would be a good choice

Thanks in anticipation big grin

The mag elite is an excellent reel mate- its also a great reel if you havent cast with multi's before because of the breaking systems.Make sure you've fitted the fibre break blocks because if you've bought it new they usually arent fitted - they're the two tiny washers in the plastic bag- take the handle side of the reel off by unscrewing the three big screws then put the blocks on each of the two spindles- you cant miss them.

Set the mags on full at first then you can ease these off once you're comfortable with casting.

Dont use braid- 15lb line is fine for beachcasting-I use Sufix tritanium- as for retrieving the line make sure you keep tension on the line either using your thumb or thumb and forefinger to guide the line on and keep the tension when you're reeling in and guide the line cotton reel fashion side to side keeping an even lay.

Cant recommend a rod- but Eccles on this site rates the Shakespeare Salt rods.

Hope this helps

If you have never used a multiplier before I'd recommend you use some cheaper line. Just in case you birdie the reel after a few casts, you won't be losing a lot of expensive line.

You could try the cheaper Ultima Red Ice which is about a fiver a spool (which I use) as a compromise - just until you are confident with your casting.

I think it's about half the price of the Siffix, even though the Tritanium is a much superior line by all accounts.

I use the Red ice (15lb) and found it to be a good all round line and not too expensive. I also find it quite useful being fairly visible day or night.

Any suggestions on Rods guys ..... Just looking on Ebay and the choice is mind numbing

Really needs to be something which will compliment the reel (ABU 6500C3 CT MAG ELITE Beachcaster reel )

I would like to keep within a figure of about £60

Just a thought Mesmo- if your budget will stretch- I use an Abu Conolon Xodus with my mag elite- its not the most powerful rod in the world and I wouldnt use it for rough ground fishing but it has a very forgiving action in that it doesnt backlash - perfect rod to go with the mag elite although as I said its a bit more than £60- i think the best price i've seen is spottydog tackle doing it for £89.

Cheers

Took your advice and went for the Red Ice for the moment ... till my casting skills have improved

Also Rod wise I have opted to go for a a Shakespeare K2 15' Extreme Titanium .... seemed no point in getting a class real and a poor rod

Will this make a decent combination and in time what distance can I realistically expect out of it with a 5oz lead?

To be honest the rod you describe is in fact for fixed spools (or so i was led to believe  ) its a continental rod but i would go for something a little more subtle like a Greys Orion or Zziplex 3500, both are brillant casting rods. in fact i found this Abu conolon rod on ebay and i have owned one of these and was great for whiting and dab fishing off beesands and slapton
Here it is: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ABU-CONOLON-SEA-FISHING-BEACHCASTER_W0QQitemZ220135597514QQihZ012QQcategoryZ11729QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

try to find a casting instructor in your area, it helps greatly!

All the best, J

The K2's are really for fixed spool reels, though you can get away with a multiplier at a push. Isn't it a bit over budget?

I've just looked and can't see anything about it being for a multiplier. I have noticed that it's been revised though. These long rods really are for fixed spools. Don't be in a rush to get a rod as you may well regret your decision when you come to use it. Try to see if you can have a play with some rods before you buy. Not wanting to insult you, but from your posts it appears that you are relatively inexperienced( fishing that is  ))
It's all to easy to make a mistake in your eagerness to get a new shiney bit of kit. I would look at the Daiwa rods, something like a sandstorm or Shakeaspeare Salt range which has already been suggested. Another reasonably priced rod is the Imax 4 stroke 6, but this may be a little too pokey for a beginner. Probably the best thing to do is go to a few tackle shops and ask their opinion. Just make it clear from the start that you are only at the looking stage and don't get pressured into buying the first rod they they show you. Feel free to keep asking questions on here as it's the best way to learn.

Recently bought a Salt beach and doing OTG style, it gets me out well over 100yds very light and easy to handle too. I choose the 12 ft because I do not like a big unwieldy rod. If you want something longer, they do a 13ft too which is spot on your price limit if you know where to go. As you are nearby to me Mesmo, you are welcome to have a bash with it mate if you like on a Hayling Beach. Just say the word.
PS Don't forget that Mike Thrussell had a hand in designing these.
