Please post your Tactics / Tips on how to catch Wrasse in your local area here. Please remember in this part of the forum to click the reply button to post and Not the "New Post" button Also one main point to remember is that these new forums are intended to help totally new sea anglers to the sport so please post in great detail type of rods/reels used, explain about traces/rigs used, depth to fish and so on or anything else I have missed that you feel will help the novice sea angler.

By a map, walk around coastal paths until you find a nice little rock mark that looks unfished. Collect lots of peeler crab and take lots of leads and your ready. Use between a 2/0 and 4/0 hook and use a rotton bttom on a simple running ledger or 1 hook paternoster. Dont bother with using a shockleader as it makes a weak point in your line, use between 25 and 35IB line all the way to the trace. Its wise to keep your rod hold as most bites are the fish slamming into your bait so they are easily able to tip your tripod over.
Good Luck

To catch really big Ballans I would recommend boat fishing from Weymouth. In the late autumn and winter they get big. I went on a specific trip to catch big ones and although I didn't do well there were there over 6LB on boat and numerous 4 and 5lbers

Using 3/0 hooks on at least 30lb trace and hard back crabs.

Two or three boats go for them try Flamer (Colin Penny) or Topcat (Ivan Wellington). Look on their websites use www.deapsea.co.uk for all availability on boats from Weymouth and elsewhere

if your after wrasse then go to mutton cove in plymouth and fish 2 hours approaching, high tide and 3 hours after drop over the edge.
Cast aroud 5 yards out drop to botton fishing with a patternoister, or a 3 hook flapper tipped with rag work working a treat taking aroud 6-10 per hour on rag testig at the weekend using mackeral, sandeel, and squid as bait.
to test what is happening with the old bait front.

shall report results. If anyones up for it i will be there at 4am on saturday morning.

regards

sully

well, if you want wrasse around the 2 to 3 pound mark on a regular basis you could do worse than to take a trip to meadfoot beach in torquay and do a little rock pooling, catch some live prawns then hike ya gear off to holden pier or beacon quay where there a some sweet little toothed monsters, ive been dragged under the rocks by a monster this last week, I reckon 4 to 5 pounder at least, but the bugger is mine, eventually

part two, torquay wrasse are sunbathers, they like calm sea and sun light, fishing right below your feet or just under the welsh flash on the quay , at low tide you can sea the gap tween two large rock formations about 15 yds out, cast out past them then pull ya float rig back, unless you got the reflexes of bruce lee, you can wave goodbye to every bottom rig you try good hunting
