Cheers for the advice on the rod & reel. I checked out the Daiwa supercast 13ft STS PM today and compared it to many others in similar price range. It felt head and shoulders better.
The reel for value i went for the Abu 6500 mag elite that has been revamped and looks top draw.
I got the lot for £220 so well chuffed. Can't wait for them to arrive so i can christen them.
Cheers again chaps and tight lines.

Fishing the bristol channel with that? i like the rod but personally i would have gone with a bigger reel like a daiwa shv20 or penn 525 mag. i have the former and my casting is on par with my 6500 ct chrome rocket. but thats just my opinion! |

Had a stab at Blue Anchor, watchet and christened my new gear with 2 doggies and a small tope.
Need to read up on the reel as tendancy to slightly birds nest when casting long. No doubt it is my poor technique. Any advice on the settings for an ABu 6500 CT.
cheers

Tone-
did you get the green Abu Mag Elite? if you did its a cracking casting reel but is more suited to clean ground as Nemesis has said
with regards to set up- have you fitted the two fibre break blocks that came with it?- they dont come pre-fitted and you have to put them in yourself. They're two tiny little brown washers which shoudl have been in the plastic bag with the oil and spanner.
Also make sure the magnets are on full until youget used to it- as you look at the reel there's a slider on the opposite side of the reel to the handle- make sure you slide it all the way down so you can see all the numbers and lines in between - this puts the magnets on full
Any probs feel free to come back

Stuart
It is the new version and the magnets are already fiitted. i think i need to just cast more and gradually adjust the settings each time.
Fishing Budleigh next week so plenty of casting coming up.

Basically tony I'd engage everything if you're whacking the casts out hard then gradually ease the mags off until you get your technique right and you're comfortable then think about reducing the blocks. this is how I did it with my mag elites till I got the right set up for me - I now have one break block in and 3 magnets as opposed to the standard set up of 4 magnets and two blocks and never get over runs.
I did make the mistake of taking both blocks out and forgot to put the mags on once- oops- awful birds nest andwent back to the set up described above- its a brilliant reel and i personally prefer them to the Penns/Supermags. |
