It's called all sorts of things to disguise it's true identity to the public.
As far as the original question is concerned, smoothounds are edible and they taste nice, but as far as anglers are concerened thay are viewed as a sport fish and are usually returned alive, especially the females.
If you really want to eat one then only take a male fish and you'll have to skin it and soak the meat in salty water overnight to remove the blood.
Personally I would return any smoothound that I caught. |

i agree with concrete you should return all smoothounds. but i dont agree that they taste nice infact they taste awful and should never be eaten. as for rock salmon thats dog fish, which is a differant fish but same family.
they are a sport fish and should be returned real quickly aswell as ive seen them die very quick as they been out of the water for only a couple of minutes, but a couple of minutes to long.
i love eating fish but would never kill a smoothound as they are looked upon as a protected sport fish that should be returned. To much hassel in skinning them and gutting them aswell |

Main prob with smoothound is they accumulate uric acid (contained in urine) within the blood which deteriorates rapidly, especially the females and larger fish. Best option is to take home only small males (up to 7lbs) and bleed them as soon as possible. Males have two long claspers (penises) running back from the vent. Then cut steaks straight across the fish and quick fry. Never, I mean never, take a female as they will invariably taste like piss. |

Agree with you Andy but you have not taught the young gentleman the correct grammar for this tense of the verb which of course is brought. "I BROUGHT a smooth hound home once." Is what he wants you to write Braderz. While we are at it, would you like to change your name to Bradders as it looks far better English than Braderz. |

No, the best construction is " I once took home a smoothound....". The fing wot reely gets me goin' is chav anglers who take home even the smallist fish and leave all their s**t all over the beech. |

No, no, no. That would be true if the smoothound had a home. However, it is well known that fish do not have homes therefore the majority would infer that I took it to my home. Modern english usage does permit such automatic inferences I believe you will find. |

There is a suggestion here that the gender of said Smooth hound is male. Unless the specific gender of the creature is known, surely it should be it's home? I'd also like to know if there was a subsequent invite to partake in coffee or did the evening end with a quick peck on the cheek at the garden gate? |
