I first used pilchard oil contained in a film-canister placed just above the weight, and sometimes between the snoods on a two-hook rig, during the 1960's on the East coast of Scotland. Of course there were a lot more fish, particularly cod, about in those days but the results on catches were very noticable. Saithe (coalfish) and haddock are also attracted by the scent, between three rods we once landed about 70 fish in one afternoon. It attracts the whole shoal not just individual fish.
I have used this method at Dover's Admiralty Pier in the late 70's and early 80's and once again the results spoke for themselves. There was about 10 people fishing the pier on one particular day that I remember and one or two rods had had the odd coddling or two whereas I caught eight in about an hour, two at a time on a couple of occassions. I was having such success, that three of the other anglers came and fished next to me, then they too started to catch coddling repeatedly.
The current is very strong here and perhaps the droplets of pilchard oil which seeped out of the canister were contained in the tidal-flow and didn't float to the surface. Anyway, once this shoal of coddling had picked up the scent-trail and 'homed in' on it they remained in the vicinity all the time I, and the others now next to me, were fishing. They eventually dispersed with the ebb-tide.
This method works.
