No it doesn't mate but a lot of folk use stiffer line or "memory free" because it theoretically reduces tangles. I have my own little tricks to help reduce tangles and am currently using some some 60lb Greased Weasel shockleader as the main body of my rigs because it is well stiff and hopefully a lot less likely to get tangled when there is a tide running. There are also gents who use clear flouro-carbon because it is near invisible in water. Don't bother with it meself and still catch fish.

The rig body should have the same breaking strain as your shockleaderor better (60lb shockleader, 60lb rig body). I normally use 25-30lb Amnesia for the hooklengths.

Agree with Duncs, unless you are NOT using a SHOCKLEADER (LOL). As is well known on this forum, I do not always use a shockleader. For a 60 to 70 yd overhead thump cast in my personal opinion a shockleader is unnecessary - decent 20lb BS line will cope - done it thousands of times. However, if I am distance casting for plaice for example, I do use a SL because an "off the ground" power cast aimed at 100 yds + puts a lot of pressure on the main line and rig in the final microsecond of the cast.

Right, a shockleader is a length of line of stronger breaking strain than the mainline. So, if you are casting with say, a six oz lead, you should have 10x the breaking strain leader ie 60lb. Your leader should be the length of the rod+your casting drop+a minimum of six turns round the spool. The idea is that in a cast, the initial forces on the line will be big enough to snap your mainline causing leads to fly unpredictably round the beach which will not make you popular. The shockleader takes the shock of this and pulls your mainline out with it.

Use an overhand knot in the leader and pull a short length of mainline through it. Tighten the overhand knot so that it grips the mainline. Once tight, pull about six inches of mainline through (this will clear the weakened bit where you've just tightened it. Make five turns around the leader with the mainline and the bring the end back round and through at the beginning again and make five more turns inside the loop you've just made. Tighten it all up and cut the tag ends close.

No. The line from your weight to your mainline should be rated at 10x the size of your weight so 5oz weight, 50lb shockleader. 6oz weight, 60lb shockleader. 7oz weight, 70lb shockleader.

So, lets say you use 18lb mainline and a 6oz lead. You spool up your reel with your 18lb line and then tie on your shockleader (60lb) which will be approx 30 foot of line. Your rig body should also be made from 60lb shockleader.

If thats still not clear, let me know and I'll post a photo.

Oh yes it might - geezer obviously don't know bout SL's and nor do a lot of part-time Sunday summer gents - see 'em on Hayling all the time catchin' mackeral, small bass and bream in the summer. They usually chuck out around 50 - 60 yds with an overhead thump and thus do not need SLs. Ho Ho Ho.......
PS only doing this to see if I can detect steam coming out of Concrete's ears at this distance.
