All my life I've used fixed spool reels, but when I do go sea fishing off the beach or rocks a lot of people tell me to go for a multiplier, I've even had this remark made in a fishing shop. What does everybody out there think? Multiplier or fixed spool, and can anyone recommend one?

To be quite honest, if your happy with a fixed spool stick with it. Fishing is all about enjoying the sport, and if (LIKE ME) you just spend all your time re-spooling because of birds nests, then quite honestly, you will not enjoy your hobby.

I can cast just as far with a FS as I can a mag at the moment - it is a big learning experience with the multipliers, and yes, they will cast further, but in the bass season, distance is the the last thing you need.

If you really want to try a multiplier, then get a good second hand (or borrowed one) mags on full, loads of thick oil, cheap line (you will birds net it) and a nod to the Gods. If nothing else it will test your casting technique. Jerky casts are not for multipliers.

The Okuma Magnetix a good reel for 60 quid, but get a level wind, you can always have it taken off for a tenner later on. The level wind will slow down the reel even further.

I hope this helps.

I agree with Screamin; the only valid answer is do you catch fish with yer FS? If the answer is yes (it certainly is for me) then why bother. I have a great multiplier too but only use it for boat fishing (it was bought for me). As I have said before, I can cast up to 150 yds using a FS and OTG style which is more than enough for most south coast fishing - end of debate.

here here, i have tried M years ago and i struggled badily, to the point fishing was no fun. Stick to the FS, at the end of the day the fish do not know what you are casting with, and i would rather be on the beach with a FS and a decent fish then stood with a nice mag and no fish.

cheers

I agree with the above comments some excellent advice there.

Although if you are seriously considering using a multiplyer why not fish 2 rods one with a fixspool reel and the other for practicing with a multi.
I would recommend trying them out. for me persoanlly I enjoy the better fishing experience using a multiplyer.
Multiplers have better balance between rod and reel in IMO, far better than with a FS, ( how ever, i'm sure ther are those that will disagree).

Soleman, it depends on how you like your reel position. I use a multiplier in reel down position, which is virtually impossible with an FS as you use the opposite hand to cast with. I agree though that you are more involved with a multiplier, but if you were a beginner it is a big step forward.

Perhaps the advice here is "Take someone with you that knows how to teach you how to use a multiplier !"

Thanks, for the time being I think I'll stick with my trusty FS.

I've been a multiplier convert for over 20 years now and wouldn't generally use a FS for anything other than spinning but I'd echo the advice to stick with the FS. Try one and learn to use it properly before you fish with one otherwise you'll hate em for life!

Nothing beats the look and feel of a little ABU on a modern light rod but its no good to you if you spend most of your time undoing birdies.

Incidentially, there is nothing stopping you learning to distance cast with a FS - they can send a lead a long way - its only at top level that the real difference between the two types of reel becomes apparent.

Some people use a multi for clean ground fishing and a fixed spool for getting fish up and back quickly over rough ground. On rock marks it is best to watch your footing, the waves and the incoming fish rather than the line-lay on your reel.
Why do people think the best fish are furthest out ?
if it is a choice between fishing or casting..... I'll choose the fishing and use a fixed spool.

Can anyone recommend a decent multiplier for me to start with, then I can fit a multiplier to one reel and a FS on the other.

I've not long started to use an ABU mag-elite and I can recommend them for the beginner. They are a bit over-braked as standard with four magnets but if you are feeling nervous you can also add some centrifugal blocks as well, just till you get a bit better at casting it. The only thing with this reel is, as with all 6500s, you need to service them regularly or they suffer.

As a 6500 is all I ever use I can't really give you much info on other makes but I don't think you would go too far wrong with any of the better makes of casting reel - but steer clear of the cheapies, you'll have nothing but grief with them.

I've been looking at the reels that are on this sites menu, has anyone got an opinion on these?
