Depends on how much you want to spend as you havent said and the type of grounds you are fishing but assuming its not heavy ground I would personally go for one of the old green Abu 6500 Mag Elites- they are on offer at £69.99 at a lot of places becuase the model has been updated- they have break blocks, tension and magnets- it's the first multiplier I bought and gives you the control you need when you're starting off plus it's a very good casting reel but you need to look after them, i.e. keep them clean as they arent as robust as a Penn 525 or a Slosh which might be worth lookng at if you fish heavier ground- both of which are a more versatile reel although the Penns are more expensive.
A lot of people also swear by the the Daiwa 7HT as well which is about the same price as the ABU |

Whatever you get don't forget to get a thumb-gaurd of some kind to help you grip the spool when you cast - stuart will explain what happens if you are too tight to shell out for a bit of inner tube or marigold gloves to cut down  |

i agree with blakdog TUMB GUARD if not it herts like a bitch.
i use a sloshy (sl20sh) and new to multis myself ,but for the extra £10 its worth it. i payed £69.99 for mine and love it ,
it casts like a dream and havent had to many birdsnests init just the odd small nests. inproved my cast to. iuse it with a sandstorm rod.
i know what your saying about the dosh, but buy the right one ONCE for life.or buy 3 or 4 over a couple of years. and works out more expenceive. 8O.
any way good luck |

Thats right- you get a sore thumb, a birdie and a useful tip- the tip being to cut away the birdie from your reel while your patient fellow angler holds onto your line as you re-join said line with a blood knot whilst watching the light rapidly fade before ones eyes- works a treat
Alternatively - follow previous advice which is to purchase some rubber products as described above by Mr Blakdog. |

Do Daiwa have 7ht mag? I know of the new 7ht turbo but thats not a mag reel.
Just out of interest has anyone had a go at the new 7ht turbo? I'm thinking of aquiring a new reel and as I love the 7ht was wondering if the new turbo is worth ago. Looks and feels very racey but I havn't had a cast with one yet.
Mads if you have never used a multi before it might be worth seeing if you could try one out. Each make of reel is so different in its performance that although some may look the nuts on the beach could be a recipe for disaster.
My opinion would be try the Abu 6500's, if you shop around you could pick one up at around £60. I cut my teeth on these and still use it today for short range work, its only the level wind that stops me from really trying to punch one out with it, the problem being is you cant get your thumb around the spool due to the level wind being in the way, but a good starter reel that will last for years if you look after them.

Mr COncrete has one and I think he said they were a good reel- incidentally if you're gonna get one I looked and the cheapest place I found was spottydogtackle who are doing them for £105- mind you they didnt have any in stock when I ordered it so got a Penn instead- everywhere else seemed to be punting the 7HT turbo's out for about approx £125. |

Cheers Stuart,
I do remember we had a short discussion about these reels at Orford but as yet I'm still trying to find an angler who has one.
Mr Concrete if its true and you have one of these babies, what are you honest opinions of them and would you recomend others to buy???

Having started out with a Penn 25 years ago, and those days they didn't do brakes at all, I have remained a fan of Penns ever since.
They are not cheap however. If you are starting out and can stretch to it try the Penn 525 Mag Extra, I started again after 18 years, and after 4 months, am now fishing with the minimum settings and one birdie on average in a 12 hour session, albeit that can be the first cast, the last or one in the middle. Depends on how well things are going and my concentration abilities.
Start off for the first five or six sessions with maximum mags and then scale down slowly.
But remember to try and let the rod do the work, not you. |

Essexman has a 7HT but it's not the turbo. I had a go of it and it seems OK. If you gave him a PM I'm sure he could give you some insight as to how good it is. |

The Turbo is an improvement on the original in my opinion. It's a dream to cast with, if a tad noisy. The retrieve is a massive improvement, with the gearing now supported by a bearing. The handle is better too. There has been murmerings about the spool, which doesn't appear to be as robust as the original. Only time will tell. I run mine with red rocket fuel in the bearings and with the two smallest brake blocks fitted. One thing of note is, when I fill the spool up, I overload it a bit, as the line seems to compact down more than on other reels after it has been used for fishing. I don't really think that the Turbo needs mags, as it casts a bl**dy long way in standard form.
Just remember, they do make a bit of a racket when cast hard, though mine is getting quieter.
When one of my Penns finally keels over, I'll no doubt get another Turbo, then I'll have a pair of each. |
