Hopefully you might understand using these pictures how i catch bass from the pier now, if not feel free to ask any questions.

Use 50 or 60lb main line and the same for your hook lenght, plus a good strong 4 or 5 size hook.

Now drop the crab as close into the pier between the 2 pylons.

And its as easy as that

Sometimes the crabs are to big to put the hook point through the otherside, as long as the crab is presented well, and you time the strike to prefection I dont think it makes any difference.
When I was up there yesterday everyone looks at you in amazement that you are catching fish and they are not, this is because I was a lucky angler 10 years ago and was shown how to and the fish the pier correctly   Get past mid June and thats when the fun begins with the bigger fish easier to catch. |

Thanks rocket for the tips. Are the crabs softies/peelers or hardbacks. Not sure if I missed this in the post. Anyway cheers for that. |

nice fish well done. As you have always said when peelers are about so are the bass :o
I look forward to your lesson on gills?
The more of your photos i see the more i am getting an itch to trek up to the end of the pier. Are peelers being sold in tackel shops yet? |

Softies/jellies as they are know are the best, but peelers do work just remove the top and bottom shell only. |

Thanks and will have to start searching for some crabs. Must say I have always probably done better from the shore with softies thinking back. |

I look forward to being able to join you and learning from the master. Have always believed there are fish to be had off the pier. It's nice to see proof. |

Excellent demonstration Rocket.
Would small hardback crabs fished this way work too?
I have noticed you visit the pier mid-week fairly regularly, and as these are the only days that are truly viable for myself to fish this venue I fully intend to be there and learn as much as possible from you, if you are willing to teach me. ( Iwant to do 'real' fishing not just 'talk' fishing  )
As I live in Westcliff, and I think I know the 'old path' that you refered to in another thread regarding collecting peeler crabs, perhaps we could meet up and you could advise me on this matter too. I have difficulty telling whether the crab is a peeler or not, even though I try the normal 'rear leg' test.
