Long casters generally catch more fish
Distance casting gives you more choice of where to fish
It is easy to cast more than 100m if you follow a few simple rules
You do not need to spend a fortune on high-performance tackle
Talent, strength and long hours of practice are unnecessary
Tournament surfcasting is a worldwide sport in its own right
Surfcasting distance records have already reached 280m (over 300yd)
Nobody fishes for long without realising that casting is one of the most important skills of fishing. Long casting gives you more options
Good casters cast short, medium or to extreme range as conditions dictate. They can choose exactly where to place a bait - behind the backwash, in a gully at 90 meters or on the far slope of a distant sandbank. Freedom of choice more than justifies the effort of learning to cast well. Long range fishing is no longer an elitist game
Fishermen used to think that they stood little chance of casting 100m, and that only the highly talented few would ever achieve 180m(200yd). Anyone who is willing to learn a few simple skills can develop a cast more than powerful enough to throw a 150gm weight at least 130m.
Good casting might be easier than you think
The "secrets" of long range casting come as something of an anticlimax to most fishermen. Casting is hard in one sense: you have to work at it, and there are no shortcuts to real expertise. Even so, casting is simple in concept. There is no special athletic skill involved, no need for exotic tackle, and you do not need a degree in physics to understand the basic mechanics. All you need to know is how to use muscle power and body weight to inject energy into the rod blank and through to the weight. Easy exercises can take you through the important steps, which are all based on natural body actions.
Knowing how to make a rod work is the basis of every successful casting style. Master that process and the road is clear to developing whichever specific style of casting that you prefer: off-ground, pendulum, and more. All good casts share the same fundamentals. Whether you are a beginner or have struggled for years, there is a reason why you cannot cast well, and you need to find out what that is. If you have tried but cannot cast well, chances are you have not yet recognised and addressed a few key issues. |

Ok Essex, don't get all fired up, I am trying to make the point that you really need to tell the newboys more or less how to do it, what kind of rod will achieve it, what will prevent them from achieving it and roughly what the different styles involve. You don't seem to me to have written any of that. |

So, Essexman, anything more specific to help then?
I've borrowed a friend's rod and fixed spool reel and been told to go and practice on a nearby playing field... |

Now look here you lot, if Essex gets any more upset, it's not my fault OK? For all I or you know, he could be 6' 6" and 22 stone (he would have to be that size to duff over my fishing buddy and minder, Big Sean). Great thing is, Big Sean doesn't even know why he is my buddy and minder - I showed him how to do an OTG and catch bream with bacon rind last year and he is now my friend for life. Some folks call us the Hayling Masterblaster.
Now in attempt to restore some sanity to this post, don't come to Hayling until next week cos it is fishing is crap at present: Did four hours yesterday at range - no flatties, no bream, no bass, no bites. Three other geezers had nothing either. If we get some change in the weather next week, I am expecting bream and bass to be back because other reports that I have seen indicate that they are not far away. Will report as soon as it livens up a bit. |
