Will, as for making own weights I use a small camping stove. Yoy would also need something to melt the lead in. I use a small saucepan for that but be careful if it has a metal handle as it can get pretty hot. You will need an appropriate lead mould which you can get on Ebay or from tackle shops. I use 150g ones which are pretty common. I use a vice to hold the lead mould in when pouring the lead into it.
You will need to either buy or make the tail loops which you attach the rig to. I sometimes buy them ready made, otherwise I use metal rod such as old bicycle spokes and bend them into shape in a vice. With your rig attachment loop one end, make sure you bend half a centimetre or so the other end into a right angle. If ya don't, the tail loop will depart from the weight on casting.
The other thing you will need if you use weights with grip wires are the grip wires themselves. Last lot I got were from Ebay and you get em usually in packs of fifty or one hundred. Therefore you will need a lead mould that is drilled to take em or get a plain mould and drill it yourself. This is what I do cos the wire positioning is not always where you want it on pre-drilled moulds.
When making the leads make sure you heat the mould up well before starting, to get rid of any moisture. Use a blowlamp or something similar for this. And make sure the lead is really well heated. I find when it is ready to use it sometimes takes on a bluey look about it on the surface. You will see what I mean if ya do it. Goggles are used by some people and also some sort of protective gloves could be handy. I've been doing it for a long time so tend to be a bit rushed with it but you can't take any chances when melting lead. Also want to do it where there is plenty of fresh air about. ( no confined spaces cos of the fumes ). Sure I must have forgotten some stuff which others may add but that is the basics. Hope it all makes sense and take care if ya start to make your own. |

If you do a search on Ebay "lead weight mould" theres a guy sells them on there. Glasgow Angling Centre sells them as do Veals I think- Or keep an eye out on Ebay for someone selling an old DCA mould-they come up now and again- though they can be quite pricey.
To be honest its a messy business making your own leads and can be a bit hazardous if you're not careful. It is fulfilling to make and use your own but I cant be bothered meself - I try to fish at least once every week and dont lose that many weights so unless you're fishing rough or snaggy ground and lose a load of weights I'm not sure if its worth the hassle bu tthats just me- I'm a self-confessed lazy so and so. |

Will, i get given the lead so I have never thought about buying it. Builders I know sometimes give me some. All offcuts of flashing that they couldn't use. This is perfect cos only millimetres thick so melts down quickly. I also use weights that I find on beach or haul in when fishing. If all else fails and you live in a house with lead water pipes or drainage type pipes then you are well away. Ready supply. If I was searching for as supply of lead I suppose I would think about approaching roofers, builders maybe. Sure someone could supply their remnants and don't suppose it would cost ya a lot.
P.s. This is the sort of thing you will need to look for I guess.........
