Does it make a difference if i use defrosted mackerel/squid or should i use fresh always?
Getting trouble buying fresh bait on weekends, but got some frozen.
Also, is there anything else worth trying other than mackerel, squid, rag or lob for beach or pier fishing.
Help guys pleeeeze!! |

If you use frozen bait, try to make sure it was fresh when it was put in the freezer. Also don't re-freeze bait, with the exception of black lug which when frozen and defrosted a couple of times can be a good dab bait, if you can stand the smell. |

I'd have to disagree slightly on the refreezing. If you refreeze mackeral it will go mushy but the secret is to buy it really fresh, do whatever prep you are going to do (strip it or whatever) and then freeze it straight away. When you go fishing, keep it in a cool box and put it on the hook frozen (it'll soon thaw in the water). The stuff left in the box should still be frozen when you get back so just stick it straight back in the freezer. Little tip here: Keep the significant other happy by buying a new, big fridge freezer and snaffle the old one as a bait fridge! |

I have a very tolerant wife, who doesn't mind me using the fridge or freezer for bait storage, providing of course it is packaged properly and it can't make smells or escape. |

We have a big eat up from time to time to clear our freezer. I don't drink a lot of beer, so I don't need the room. I don't drink alot in general, but I'll make an exception when you're buying
You're safe really 'cos I'll be driving  |

Oh! I nearly forgot, I'm also partial to port.
When I was first going out with Mrs C, my Father in law put a full bottle of very expensive port in front of me and told me to help myself. He then went out. When he came back, there I was, asleep on the couch with a near empty bottle in front of me. He's never let me forget that   |

I once made 6 gallons of blackberry wine and let it mature for three years. It was very like a good port by the time I bottled it!  |

thanks for the tip  - I have always been frustrated by mackeral going mushy on the beach once defrosted, it usually ends up being thrown away. ( have also done the new freezer trick - it works :!: ) |

A couple of years back, me and some mates went to the admiralty and feathered up a load of mackerel. Even a year later they weren't mushy out of the freezer. It's all down to how fresh they were when they went in.
Still your "TOP TIP" makes sense. |
