I'll take that piece of info on board. Any thoughts on Mustad? I was having a look at them the other day and I kinda like the chunky, weighty feel of them. (ooer) |

Really must go. Will continue rod debate another time. I'll think about. Don't like the Mustads personally.
Goodnight. |

The stem of Southend pier, in summer/autumn, is very good for mullet. I watched a group of guys in September catching them on bread, they were fishing half-way beteween the 2nd and 3rd shelters and there was a small shoal of about 10-12 good-sized fish (4-8lbs) swimming around the piles of the pier. I saw them hook and land two in about twenty minutes, another they lost whilst lifting it up to the railings (no dropnet)
Whilst floatfishing fish-strip bait from the stem of the pier, I have taken bass, mackerel and garfish; spinning has led to similar results but far fewer fish. In my experience, spinning, or even feathering, is the only worthwhile method of angling to employ at the pierhead.
I shall never know why people persist on making for the pierhead at this venue, when the best fishing is along the stem. I have fished the pier since the 1970s and through trial and error have found this to be the case.
However, in general, the fishing on the pier is not as good as it was a few years ago, nevertheless, it is by far the most prolific mark in the Southend area, particularly during summer/autumn and darkness when the bigger fish are hunting for food.

The stem is ok on the ebb if you want to catch small fish 95% of the time, but when you go to the end and catch 1/2 dozen bass over 5lb, well there's no comparision. |

perhaps this difference of opinion could be settle at the first club match in April
I have tried the pier head caught small fish & lost loads of gear, fished the stem & caught small fish but kept my gear :!: tackle losses now dictate where I fish. |
