But it is! Although primarily formulated as a water dispersal / anti corrosion agent, it does have lubricating properties.
The WD40 company is American and with the American "sue anyone" culture, they would not dare to advertise it as a lubricant if it was not.
Something does not have to be oil to be a lubricant, water is a lubricant, as is graphite, KY Jelly and other substances - not that I'm suggesting that you put any of these in your reel bearings

Well, the fact that it offers some lubrication does not mean you should put it in reel bearings (any more than you would squirt water into them). Given the speed at which the bearings spin, I imagine your bearings' life would be reduced quite a bit, though I've never tried it. |

Okay lets agree that WD 40's primary function is not a lubricante, I now diverse slightly...................................after a session and the Multiplier has been rinsed and dried, for arguments sake say 3in1 has been used where are the obvious points that need to be lubricated???? in your opinion.

There is a simple solution to this. I've been using it for years. Don't fish near anyone else!
Would it not make sense just to use different lubricants according to the season? After all, it's not likely to be hot for a few months now. To expect a 'one size fits all' solution for the year round might be pushing things a bit. |

To add to the WD40 pot ... it is a lubricant .... but it evaporates extremely quickly, even in the cold and the first decent cast will throw 99.9% out of your bearings.
There are plenty of good reel oils on the market these days (my favourite is a roller skating one) but if you want to be a cheapskate but still have good bearings then good old fashioned 3-in-1 can't be beaten for all year round use. In fact I still have a couple of reels (a TSMII for one) that I still use it in by choice. |

I will again ask where are the primary points of lubrication after a session ???just routine maintenace as opposed to the complete strip down service

Obvious point is bearings ..... but as most of the lubricant qualities of wd40 will be gone after the first or second cast .... your gonna be busy with the screwdrivers.
Experiment for anybody with ceramic hybrid bearings to try is to use wd40 in them ... then listen to them get noisier and noisier through a sesssion as the wd disappears - they generally scream like hell about 3rd cast |
