Hi eccles I always keep my head lamp off the water. But I fished right up close to the pub do you think that could ruin the chances(It was a slow night for everyone I spoke to but the pub does cast alot of light ).As mick said the bait was stripped in no time.

Do you really think that the loight situation matters that much as i catch lots of sole from the port in marchwood and its lit up like an xmas tree with lights galore shinning on the water ect..

Depends what they are used to. Dave Slingsby ("Solehunter") who is the local expert on the IOW, advised me to stay as dark and quiet as possible and that is what I have done for the past 5 years that I have been targetting sole over here.

Some good points on sole fishing. Waters are different depending on the colour of the water is paramount.

For example Magazine lane produces some lovely sole as does marchwood as Danny stated. Those 2 waters are lit up big time at night and it doesnt effect the fishing. Now you could state that water depth but magazine lane is very deep and marchwood is shallow. Regarding rigs i have caught on 3 hook flappers and a rig called a helicopter rig. The heli rig is a running weight with 3 hook flappers below it. Each flapper has a red bead just above the hook so it helps keep the bait on the bottom. With the heli rig only cast a maximum of 30 yards as it can lead to tangles. The only beach i target for sole this time of year is Clarence beach in Portsmouth as it is a well known beach for them. With some watercraft at low water you can pick out some lovely sole spots where the sand meets the shingle.

Hope that helps winking

Dave the sole hunter from the I.O.W knows his stuff and has had some brilliant catches from his waters. But as stated every water is different.

Another good spot that i forgot to mention is Brownwich cliffs to the right of hill head wall. That is a spot where you wouldn't shine a light on the water. winking

Do you think venues like magazine lane are allways lit up, so the fish are used to bright lights, where as venues like hayling are predominantly dark, so any light puts the fish on edge.
