How can you tell from a fuzzy picture of half a fish?
I'm not saying it isn't a tope, I don't know, but I'd like to be able to distingiush for myself should I ever be lucky enough to catch one.

Purely that i have caught a few that size. Im no fish identification expert but i can tell that its not a smoothound. Once you have caught a few smoothounds/tope you get to tell the difference. Here's a thread to help http://www.sea-fishing.org/ftopict-26268.html. Plus tope have sharpe teeth and smoothounds dont |

Tope have been caught close inshore admittedly by boat at 53lb smaller ones from the shore are a regular occurrence.

this indeed was a tope i have had a few doggies but i never had a tope before so i know the difference as i have been fishing all the best part of 30 or more years but this had the sharp teeth i had a good look and still keep my fingers intact
i have seen tope before being caught off gynn wall but never had the experience of catching one myself until that night |

Thanks for the tip about using squid (whole, baby or strip?)
I wasn't for a moment doubting that you knew what you caught, I was asking how another person, who had only seen what you must admit is a poor photo of the fish and not the fish itself, could be so sure. Perhaps I should have phrased my question differently, like "please tell me what the features are which distinguish a tope from smoothhound, huss, dogfish great white etc" but I'm afraid I didn't
I asked the question simply to improve my own knowledge, not to try and belittle someone else. As I said, I have never (to my knowledge) caught a tope and should I be lucky enough to catch one I would like to be able to identify it as a tope and not one of the other shark species.
I asked the same question elsewhere and to be honest, I received a far more definitive reply - shape of nose, teeth etc. "I've caught loads and I know what they look like" is not a very helpful description is it? (this is not directed at sp3ctrum)
Rgds
