One other thought has occurred actually ... and admittedly it would be firmly in the antique bracket for some anglers but they are still in production .... the Alvey Sidecast.
A centrepin reel that you swivel round on the reel foot so it casts like a fixed spool - it doesn't have multiplying gears but the big spool means that isn't going to be a problem in shallow water and they are build like a tank!
Back in the 50s well know anglers such as Caunter used them to catch Sharks and Tunny in Uk waters so I'm sure they would cope with a bit of uptiding.

I said some anglers perceive them as antique ... they are actually getting a growing following again and have moved with the times, modern materials and bearings etc.
I know of one very respected Northern matchman who uses one regularly for rock fishing and they are probably one of the most reliable reel designs on the market. A friend of mine put a 150 gram lead over 200 metres out on the grass with a bog standard one .... that hardly puts them in the "behind the times" category. They can't compete with a little ABU for smoothness and balance but if anglers weren't so blinkered they would I think be a lot more popular than the fixed spool, there would also be a good many less cheapo FS reels thrown in the bin each year.
The Sidecast is a classic example of a brilliant idea held back by closed minds. |
