Tripod advice

In the market for a new tripod and was looking at the Imax telescopic or the MTI one ......only thing about the MTI one is i believe it is rather heavy.

Any ideas about these tripods and esp the weight of the MTI one?

Also what tripods do you guys use and where i.e beach or rocks or pier etc and what are the pro's and cons of the ones you use each time you go fishing.

i use two tripods, a little 4' one (not sure what make) cost me 15 quid. very light and does the job if i'm traveling light... not amazing but better than nothing.

then i have an ian gouds match tripod. can get two rods on it. its got a ground spike so its good for the beach, but its great on a pier too. it is a bit heavy (though thats an advantage on windy days) and folds up to 6' so not the easiest to transport long distance.

thanks for the info geordie.....the length of the ian golds ones are what puts me of a bit thats why i was looking at the IMAX or the MTI as these at least go down to 5' and are a wee bitty cheaper

if i use two rods, one of them is a 12' two piece so it makes no odds

For pier fishing I use a piece of 2 inch plastic drain pipe that I strap to a suitable balustrade or something solid with a few cable ties. I have a hole drilled through and a cable tie put through it to stop the reel resting on the top rim.

For the beach I got some stainless steel sand-spikes custom made locally. they work well in sandy beaches and mud. 1.3 metre long with a sharpened end ..easy to carry 2.

I use a telescopic bank stick stuck in a sand spike. Makes me more mobile and is not cumbersome like a tripod.

it did cross my mind to look at bank sticks or sand spikes but as a good deal of my fishing is done from rock marks a tripod is more appropriate.
Could always get a sand spike for the beach for messing about with a 3rd rod at some time.

They are out of production now I think but you can still find the odd supplier with them in stock ... the breakaway 5 or 6ft rest. Well made and nifty design and a lot stronger than a lot of pricier rests - its also the lightest tripod (of any quality) that I've ever come across and my old one has been going for (wait for it) 15 years plus. Obviously its dead if your car over it but so are all of them.

If you don't mind the weight (and having to pay for all those "useful" extras) the Golds ones are well made but they weigh a bit.

try a slightly smaller diameter pipe, cut it along its length, then drill two screws through it, about 2" appart, then wrap them with lots of ellectricins tape around them.

the pipe clips over the rail and the rod rests between the screws.....

I have the mti tripod and it is heavier then other tripods but i have used mine now about a dozen times and i always managed even on some longer walks,
the tripod is well built and very solid well worth it's money.

i use the shakespear salt very stable and adjustable if you use longer rods, had mine over a year now and i allso fish off rocks with it, it also comes in is own bag with shoulder strap great piece of kit well worth the money, cheers ian

Well I'm afraid theres only one choice in my opinion and thats an Ian Golds they may come at a cost but I've had mine for longer than I can remember and its still strong happy

I bought a 6ft tripod from fishing discount store about 6 months ago
It is so good I have just bought another
It has twin ajusteball but cups
And leg locks
All aluminum construction
£39.99 bargain

Thanks for all the input guys and i know everyone has a favourite but i have now taken the plunge and (fanfare) bought the MTI rest big grin

I know it is a bit heavier at about 3kg ish but the SALT one is 2.7 so not too much heavier.
Looking forward to recieving it in the next couple of days waiting

and i have also found a slight modification somewhere else that seemingly makes it even more useful so look forward to that as well.
