| wow wiz you certainly know your stuff im going to try a squeeze another season from my 7s and save a bit more so its not such a hit when it come to some new ones, cheers guys i know what im getting next year, thanks matt |
The other option, if you are happy with what you have is to rebuild them. New gears etc are not that expensive especially when you consider the price of a new reel nowadays. |

myself, I use ABU 6500 C3 Ct Mag Elites for all my beach work amd Abu 7000i for heavy pier and boat work, i always keep on top of them service wise, but if i have a major fault i send to ABU to be repaired, all done no messin and dont cost you much,

Abus (well the cheapy one I have : 6500 CT powerhandle) are so simple to take apart and clean. Casts nice, but was a bit on the slow side before I oiled it. Nice small light spool..but sadly probably about as strong as a polystyrene cup. But after looking inside I wouldn't want to hook a really big fish on one...it'd probably implode and fall to bits. The higher spec models might be better(?) ...aren't they all banged out in mass over in china rather than sweden now..
I've got a Penn slidy mag 525. Fast..even with the mags fully on it's a lot quicker than the abu. The retrieve is strong and smooth. After looking inside though it's like a labrinyth. Chunky gears and a spool that doesn't look like tin foil like the one on the Abu. With a fully loaded spool I can juuuust about get my thumb over it so that's something to think about aswell.
Have been looking at Saltists and they do look very nice. The 'full metal jacket' does appeal to me but...i've yet to have any problems with either of my reels. |

My favourites are
light beachwork- Abu 6500 elite or mag elite
heavy beachwork- Penn 525
Rocks- Daiwa Slosh30
Floundering/mulleting-small fixed spool
This is just my opinion, but has worked grest over the years |

peoples opinions vary quite a bit on this subject, but I will say you only get what you pay for and i would rather pay for a decent one.

The gears on the Ph are exactly the same as the higher spec models ... if you service them they will be fine and have landed a very long list of very big fish over the years ... just remember its a fishing reel and you have a clutch on it for a reason, so the reel can give line and not break.
The cage incidentially will be the round bar CT cage .... much better than the ugly flat bar one, just as strong and sits lower on the rod so better for getting your thumb across - the only cheapy bits of the powerhandle are the side plates to be honest. For the record I've never seen or heard of a spool exploding or cracking on an ABU used from the beach ... and although the ultracast spools look flimsy they are far from it. |
