The Abu 7,000, good rate of retrieve, holds plenty of line in the event of a snap off, Rugged construction, well proven over the year for both shore and boat fishing.

Downside may be a bit heavy
Cheers

525 mag great reel fast retrieve rate casts like a dream,
I have a slosh 20 but find the spool narrow and deep a little more tricky to load unlike the 525's spool which is pretty much the perfect size.

then you could look into the 6500 mag hi speed another great reel,

Hi Matt

I've always had Daiwa's and I rate the slosh 30 for allround fishing and they're probably one of the best for rough ground.
Having said that , the Penn's are a great reel as well . big grin

Abu Record 60 or 61 HC about £260.00 for 2.
Abu highspeed mag £210.00 for 2.
Daiwa 7HT mag £360.00 for 2.
Penn 525 mag extra £240.00 for 2.
All genuine 160 metre casting reels with baits.
I personally use and rate the lhw Abu Record 61 HC.

Thats a very good price for new ones, but why not have your 7ht,s rebuilt, better the devil you know.
I,ve heard a few people say that the penns can be a bit nest happy and I know of 3 people who,ve cracked there side plates when tripods have blown over, something that doesn,t happen with Daiwas and Abus.

Don't get me wrong .... all good suggestions but I'm going to play devils advocate here. Every reel here is a goodun, quite frankly and rightly popular ... but in choosing you also need to know the cons about them. Most of us have a favourite model, and most of us have learnt to live with its faults (and they all have them), its just good to know them before you buy. Remember its not all about what is good on paper either - it doesn't matter how good a reel is, if you don't feel comfortable with it and it doesn't feel good to fish with, its a waste of money.

7HT Mag - good for beginners but overbraked for the more experienced ... the mag design has a flaw in it that short casts often don't develope the centrifugal force to engage the "magnifuge" system and that often catches people out. Keeping the brake mechanism clean is imperitive otherwise it jams and you have no brakes.

7HT / 7HT Turbo - cracking reels, probably even a classic now - two failings that I can think of ... the drive shaft design is flawed and benefits from the addition of a pin to stop excessive movement and wear. They can be a real handful - I've yet to see a slow 7HT and beginners can struggle because they don't understand how to tune down with oil etc.

ABU 5500/6500 MAG - need tons of TLC. Well looked after they are smooth, lovely to cast and bombproof with a full rack of magnets. Without proper servicing they become clapped out dogs in half a season. NON Magged versions are a lot less user friendly and the advice about tuning with oils applies. If you like tinkering, you will love one of these though.

The ABU records are the same as above really, get your screwdrivers and oil out ..... an ABU is for life not just for xmas!

ABU 7000 - heavy and give todays light rods an ungainly feel. Aslo difficult to get hold of a swedish one now. They can be difficult to control because of the large spool which develops a lot of momentum.

Daiwa saltist - again a heavy spool and a heavyish reel ... pretty much the same issues as the 7000 but with MUCH better gears and very strong chassis. Good rough ground reel.

SLOSH - as above really, gaers bombproof but very unbalanced and ungainly on a light rod. Again a good rough ground reel.

Penn MAGs - some critical problems with the carbon cages - basically they crack! If you tighten up a screw or two too tight on a serviced reel you can actually find you've knocked it out of balance and have to tweak the screws to "square" the reel again - I use a home-made torque wrench to reassemble them. Occasionally you get reels that keep cracking sideplates too, but I think the two problems are linked, possibly cage flex. Also the Xtra is prone to spool distortion problems. the old non-mag models seem to be very strong and not prone to the same problems.

Bear in mind your stature when you choose a reel - if you have little hands you are probably going to struggle to control a 7000, SLOSH or Saltist.

Despite all the above ... if any one of them turned up in your xmas stocking you'd have a half decent reel to go with.
