What is your opinion of these Electric Outboards?

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BISON-40ft-lb-ELECTRIC-OUTBOARD-FREE-BAG-CHARGER_W0QQitemZ330373638669QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_SportingGoods_FishingAcces_RL?hash=item4cebcdaa0d

Only looking because I need something to push a 7.5ft fibreglass tender, approx 50metres, but can't afford a petrol outboard....

Do you think it's got the guts to do that against the tide at Maldon?

I looked up in the spec for a few different models, and they all state that 10lb's thrust is equal to 1hp, this being 40lb's would equate to a 4hp standard outboard.

I have also looked at this one because all the others are only 30lb's, 3hp.

Just found another one at 55lb's, 5.5hp

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BISON-55ft-lb-ELECTRIC-OUTBOARD-MOTOR_W0QQitemZ330372544875QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_SportingGoods_FishingAcces_RL?hash=item4cebbcf96b

Obviously it is also very light, except the battery, but I figure that would be the same as carrying a tank of fuel anyway....

Does anybody have any experience with anything like this?

hi
in use an electric out board though not the ones on your link ,i think it would be just the job for your short trips and very quiet,i use ex alarm batterys the larger type and just swap them over if they run out of steam, good luck.

I would recommend a second hand minnkota over any other manufacture.I have owned one for 8years and the only problem i have had was in june when the speed controller burnt out new one was sourced from canada it has been used on average 4hrs a everyday 4 twenty weeks each year .Its a 30lb thrust model used on a 70 acre lake in france on a ten foot dingy. In that time i brought 3 over high power cheaper motors and they lasted less than 10 weeks and its very hard to source parts for the less known makes.

Sorry i went on a bit then whew!

Thanks for the replies chaps.

I eventually took the plunge and opted for the Bison 55lb.

Not sure if I will get to use it before Xmas, or if it will even get here before Xmas?

I got a trip planned for the 20th Jan so I'll give it a try on the 19th, i'll go on the High tide though, just in case, I can then tie a line to the big boat and give it a go on the ebb, that way I can pull myself back if it doesn't do the job.

I'll let you know if it works ok....

thanks for the replies, didn't think the electrics would be enough, 5hp sounds about right but does 2 stroke or 4 stroke make any difference to the hp required?

thanks Shrimperfan..

no it makes no difference in power but 4 strokes are better for fuel consumption
